A Canada Summer Jobs Grant allows 99.3 CountyFM to hire a Broadcast Journalist for 8 weeks this summer.

99.3 CountyFM is the only radio station which exclusively focuses on serving the needs of rural Prince Edward County.  We operate a not for profit community radio station that reflects and contributes to the richness, diversity, public safety and economic vitality of Prince Edward County.  As an essential service we provide 24/7 news, entertainment, programming, and emergency messaging.  The station has small staff and 100+ volunteers. More details at www.993countyfm.ca

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in the world of radio broadcasting, specifically in the area of community outreach journalism.  

The position offers an individual the ability to work at a not-for-profit local community radio station in a supportive environment, where both staff and volunteers will make every effort to ensure the individual experiences as many different facets of radio broadcast work as possible. At the completion of this placement, the individual will have an excellent base of knowledge and experience to support continued education in the field of journalism and broadcasting in general.

More specifically, the role of this broadcast journalist placement focuses strongly on community outreach which will allow the individual to cover and reflect news and events from across Prince Edward County.

The population of Prince Edward County that identifies as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), is about five percent, or approximately 1 in 20 people (according to StatsCan’s 2016 census). 

Through the placement, the applicant has the opportunity to research and develop stories that highlight experiences of people of colour and address issues related to racism in its many and varied forms. These stories have the potential to also help strengthen and broaden cohesion in our community

Specifically, key tasks and responsibilities of the position include: 

  • Research community events and happenings
  • Report on identified events, with story recommendations and news angles
  • Explore opportunities to report on BIPOC stories and news events that will enlighten, engage and educate our audiences
  • Represent the station at events, potential for reports back to the station
  • Use remote broadcasting equipment
  • Complete analysis and reports on social media activity to gauge effectiveness
  • Support 99.3 CountyFM’s priority marketing and fundraising activities
  • Brainstorm and create social media posts for 99.3 CountyFM’s channels 
  • Actively participate and contribute ideas during news team meetings, some of which may be held virtually, and reach out to volunteers when assistance is required
  • Provide administrative support to the news team 

As this role offers the chance to be involved in the station’s broader news gathering functions, other duties and tasks will be assigned as required.

The work will be performed at the 99.3 CountyFM broadcast studios at 38 Cold Storage Road, Picton, ON, as well as at community and other civic functions throughout Prince Edward County. Own transportation would be beneficial but is not mandatory.  Travel reimbursement will be provided when using a personal vehicle or taking public transit to attend events on behalf of 99.3 CountyFM.

The Government of Canada has identified five national priorities for the Canada Summer Jobs program and 99.3 CountyFM’s objective with this role is to support two of these priorities: (1) black and other racialized youth and (2) indigenous youth.
