There was a hot topic to be discussed last night at council and the seats were full of residents anxious to hear and comment about the non confidence resolution in the mayor’s leadership being presented by Councillor Engelsdorfer. Due to the nature of the situation, Councillor McNaughton took the reins and guided the councillors through hours of questions and comments. Mayor Ferguson stated that the situation has 74erfected him personally and took exception to many of the clauses listed. Some of the resolution pertained to the disruption to businesses and residents in Wellington with the water line construction but the strong mayor issue came up . The strong mayor clause was omitted and will be discussed at a special meeting. The resolution tied 7 to 7 with Councillors Grosso, Maynard, Roberts, Hirsch, St.Jean, McNaughton and the Mayor voting against.
Cao Wallis gave her extensive and detailed quarterly report at council last night and was commended and thanked by many councillors who stated they regularly used the reports as references. In view of her departure the end of the month , many of the councillors thanked her for her dedication, expertise and guidance and wished her well.
Last night council heard a deputation from Tom Foulds, representing 851 Prince Edward Air Cadet Squadron , regarding the 80 th anniversary of the Liberatiom of the Netherlands and the future of remembrance in the County. He encouraged council to participate in remembrance of those who have served in the forces by collaborating with the local Legions with small projects and anniversaries focusing on remembrance and to continue to participate in national programs recognizing veterans. Councillor Branderhorst spoke about her Dutch heritage and presented a motion that staff report back opportunities to collaborate with the legion and cadet squadron on ways to celebrate the historical contributions. It carried unanimously.
At least 20 people were feared killed after suspected militants opened fire on tourists in India’s Jammu and Kashmir territory on Tuesday, three security sources said, the worst attack on civilians in the troubled Himalayan region for years. The attack occurred in Pahalgam, a popular destination in the scenic, mountainous region where mass tourism, especially during the summer months, has seen a resurgence as Islamist militant violence has eased in recent years. One security source put the death toll at 20; the second put it at 24 and the third at 26
The body of Pope Francis, laid out in an open coffin, was carried in a solemn procession on Wednesday from his residence within the walls of Vatican City to St. Peter’s Basilica.
Red-hatted cardinals, priests, candle-carrying friars and helmeted Swiss Guards walked slowly into the vast, sunlit esplanade as a male choir chanted psalms and prayers in Latin while the great bells of the basilica tolled.
