Two young people have been charged after a threat was reportedly made against Prince Edward Collegiate Institute in Picton. Prince Edward OPP received information on Wednesday afternoon about threats that were directed at the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school. As a result of the investigation, two young people have been charged with uttering threats and held for bail. The school’s name wasn’t released by police, however, in a letter emailed to parents on Thursday evening, Kimberly Myderwyk, the school principal, said they are aware of the threat made within the school community. Myderwyk said they are working with the OPP to investigate and seek clarity.
For the first time this campaign, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre made a stop in Nova Scotia on Thursday — the second province he’s visited led by a Progressive Conservative premier conspicuously absent from the federal party’s events. Poilievre’s sole campaign trip to Nova Scotia ended without meeting Premier Tim Houston, who did not attend Poilievre’s Trenton, N.S., rally just minutes from Houston’s own provincial riding While Houston had previously said he would stay out of the federal campaign, sources say there has been tension between the two leaders for months. During last year’s provincial election, Houston told reporters he would not be inviting Poilievre to campaign with him, saying he’s not a member of any federal party.
A jury in Cayuga, Ont., has found both Randall McKenzie and Brandi Stewart-Sperry guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Ontario Provincial Police Const. Greg Pierzchala. The jury came in with its verdict around 9 p.m. Thursday after beginning deliberations earlier in the day. The pair each received a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years, court heard. Both had pleaded not guilty in the Dec. 27, 2022, roadside shooting of the 28-year-old officer, who responded to the co-accused crashing a stolen car into a ditch outside Hagersville.
Indian and Pakistani soldiers briefly exchanged fire along their highly militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, Indian officials said Friday, as tensions soared between the nuclear-armed rivals following a deadly attack on tourists. India has described the massacre in which gunmen killed 26 people, most of them Indian, as a “terror attack” and accused Pakistan of backing it. Pakistan denied any connection to the attack near the resort town of Pahalgam in India-controlled Kashmir. It was claimed by a previously unknown militant group calling itself the Kashmir Resistance.
A senior Russian military official was killed in a car explosion near Moscow on Friday, just hours before a Kremlin meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff. The Russian authorities named the officer as Lt Gen Yaroslav Moskalik, the deputy head of the main operations directorate of the general staff of the Russian armed forces. The blast appeared to be similar in nature to previous attacks on Russians that were later claimed by Ukraine and could cast a shadow over Friday’s talks between Moscow and Washington. The Russian investigative committee said the explosions were caused by the detonation of an improvised explosive device packed with shrapnel. The committee, which investigates major crimes, said it had opened a criminal case.
