Walmart’s first quarter profit slipped and it said it must raise prices due to higher costs from tariffs implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump. The nation’s largest retailers posted strong quarterly sales today and said it expects sales growth of 3.5% to 4.5% in the second quarter. Like many other U.S. companies, however, it did not issue a profit outlook for the quarter because of the chaotic environment, with stated U.S. tariff policies changing constantly. The company maintained its full year guidance issued in February. Walmart earned $4.45 billion, or 56 cents per share, in the quarter ended April 30, down from $5.10 billion, or 63 cents per share, in the same period last year. Revenue rose 2.5% to $165.61 billion, just short of analyst estimates.
The bodies of a man and a woman who got trapped as a wildfire burned near the community of Lac du Bonnet in southeastern Manitoba were recovered by police yesterday morning, RCMP say. Mounties got a report Tuesday that people had been stranded by the out-of-control wildfire in the area, but first responders couldn’t get to them until yesterday morning because of the extreme conditions. Police can’t confirm the victims’ identities until their autopsies are done. It’s believed they died from injuries sustained in the fire. As of yesterday afternoon, that fire — one of more than 20 burning across Manitoba — was estimated to be about 4,000 hectares in size while another fire northeast of the Lac du Bonnet area, near Manitoba’s Nopiming Provincial Park along the Ontario border, was listed as being 100,000 hectares.

NATO as an organization does not own any weapons. The European Union’s criminal justice agency, Eurojust, said today that it had provided support for a cross-border investigation into alleged corruption involving current and former NSPA employees. The investigation stretches to Spain and Luxembourg, where the NSPA is based.
President Donald Trump’s new pick for surgeon general wrote in a recent book that people should consider using unproven psychedelic drugs as therapy and in a newsletter suggested her use of mushrooms helped her find a romantic partner. Dr. Casey Means’ recommendation to consider guided psilocybin-assisted therapy is notable because psilocybin is illegal under federal law. It’s listed as a Schedule 1 drug, defined as a substance “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Oregon and Colorado have legalized psychedelic therapy, though several cities in Oregon have since banned it.
