THE COUNTY  WRITES….THE COUNTY READS

What are you reading? Dave MacKay is reading a novel set in Italy during World War II which has been called “great-hearted, hopeful and deeply imaginative.” Jane MacDonald is reading a book which will be discussed at the first meeting of the Reconciliation Reading Group at Macaulay House on June 11. Colin Frizzell is reading a book about Russia which predates the invasion of Ukraine and is described as “an unforgettable voyage into a country spinning from decadence into madness.”

On the roads again! As the County’s rehabilitation and preventive maintenance program gets underway, Ronnie Joslin, Construction & Technical Services Supervisor, describes the various surfacing treatments and factors that determine which roads are on the list. Sheila Braidek, Executive Director of the Belleville and Quinte West Community Health Care Centre and Co-Lead for the HPE OHT Stewardship Group, discusses the proposal presented to the Ministry of Health which would expand medical staff, add to neighbourhood clinics and provide primary care to 35,000 patients in the area.  Radiothon 2025! Craig Mills, 99.3 County FM’s General Manager and Megan Hutton, co-ordinator of the 45+ musicians taking part, have all the info on the annual 3 day fundraising event.

Picture a huge lake covering Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Huron, with nothing but ice to the north. That was Lake Iroquois, which existed right here, 20,000 years ago. The lake didn’t flow out through the St. Lawrence River–  it took a dramatic event at the end of the last Ice Age to change that drainage pattern. Pamela Stagg and Mark Stabb of the Nature Conservancy Canada spoke about Lake Iroquois, on what was the shore of this ancient lake.

Gage Broderick interviews the host of the 3 Letters Mix Show, County FM’s hip-hop hour, Carlos Merchant, aka DJ Mr Solo. Carlos details his life and how his prolific DJ career led him to working to bring more of the hip-hop scene to the County.

Liz Zylstra overviews an exciting author series in celebration and recognition of Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Pride Month, sponsored by the Huff Family Fund through the County Foundation. She also shares information about a new Reconciliation Book Club hosted in partnership with the Prince Edward County Museums.
