It’s Remembrance Day today and in spite of wintery weather in Ontario and Quebec, Canadians gathered at cenotaphs and churches across the country to honour the men and women who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and those that made the ultimate sacrifice. In Prince Edward County services were held in three locations. In Consecon, a service was held at the Consecon Legion. In Wellington a service at the Wellington United Church was followed by a wreath laying at the Wellington Memorial and in Picton, a service at the Picton United Church was followed by a march to the cenotaph for the wreath-laying ceremony. This year was notable for two significant anniversaries. 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 110th anniversary of the publishing of the poem In Flanders Fields.

US lawmakers are heading back to Washington today in preparation for a vote tomorrow that could end the record 42 day government shutdown after a deal was reached on funding. The return of the legislators is complicated by the extensive cancellation of flights due to a lack of air traffic controllers affected by the shutdown. Some congressional members have said they are car pooling and one even said he would ride his motorcycle to Washington to be there for the vote. The US government could be fully functional with a few days with payments flowing to unpaid federal workers again. The funding agreement will add 1.8 trillion to the US deficit but will not extend Obamacare benefits as Democratic legislators had been requesting. The deal also only extends to January 30th so another shutdown could be happen early in the new year.
The Non-profit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen demanded that OpenAI withdraw it’s video-generation software Sora 2 in a letter today. The letter, addressed to company CEO Sam Altmn and copied to the United States Congress, accuses OpenAI of disregarding the risks of misinformation and invasion of privacy due to a consistent and dangerous pattern of rushing to market with products that are not safe and lack appropriate guardrails. The advocacy group joins other advocacy groups, entertainment interests, experts and celebrities who have criticized the new app. OpenAI also faces lawsuits and criticism of it’s Chatbot application and has had to backtrack on features and add privacy and moderation controls in response to complaints.
And Darcy Clarke, the owner of Bentley’s Burgers and Fries in West Chezzetcook, N.S., recently took a phone order for two cheeseburgers and some fries but the caller never showed up to pick it up. Clarke thought no more about until he recently received a handwritten letter from someone in Alabama who apologized for calling the wrong restaurant and included $40 US to pay for the order. The sender said they meant to call a Bentley’s restaurant much closer to home. The Clarkes posted the letter on Facebook and it has garnered 80,000 views so far along with thousands of positive comments commending kindness and consideration of the Alabama letter writer. Laura Clarke, Darcy’s wife, said the $40 was more than enough to cover the order so they plan to use the rest to give free ice cream to kids next summer. They also plan to send a Christmas package to the return address on the letter along with copies of the positive comments from their facebook page.
