A recent investigation in Brighton has resulted in the arrest of five
individuals and the seizure of 580 illicit cannabis plants and more than
1,100 pounds of dried illicit cannabis bud. On Monday, October 27, 2025,
members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Provincial Joint Forces
Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET), along with the OPP Emergency
Response Team and members of the Northumberland and Peterborough
OPP Detachments and Northumberland and Peterborough Community
Street Crime Units, executed a warrant at a location on Boes Road in
Brighton. The location consisted of a greenhouse area which contained
illicit cannabis plants in different stages of growth. Officers seized a total of
580 illicit cannabis plants and approximately 1,100 pounds of dried illicit
cannabis bud. The combined value of the illegal cannabis is estimated at
more than $1.6 million. As a result of the investigation, the following five
individuals from the GTA were each charged two offences under
the Cannabis Act, specifically unlawfully cultivate, propagate or harvest a
cannabis plant
There was a fire in a residential building in Belleville on Thursday morning.
Firefighters were called to the 50 block of Donald Street behind McDonald’s
Restaurant shortly before 7 a.m. Smoke and flames were seen coming
from the building but firefighters were able to enter the structure.
All occupants had escaped safely and the fire was under control in about
an hour. A short stretch of Donald Street between North Front and North
Park streets will be closed until the scene is cleared.
A U.S. judge on Thursday approved a request by the Justice Department to
dismiss a criminal case against Boeing stemming from two fatal 737 MAX
plane crashes that killed 346 people including 18 Canadians. However,
Judge Reed O'Connor, of the U.S. District Court in Fort Worth, Texas, said
he disagreed with the Justice Department that dismissing the case is in the
public interest but said he did not have authority to reject the decision. He
added the government's deal with Boeing "fails to secure the necessary
accountability to ensure the safety of the flying public." Boeing said in a
statement it will honour the obligations of its agreement.
Israeli jets struck several towns in southern Lebanon on Thursday, marking
an escalation in their near-daily strikes on the country. The airstrikes came
despite a ceasefire from November 2024, and hours after Hezbollah urged
the Lebanese government not to enter negotiations with Israel. There was
no immediate toll provided by the Lebanese health ministry from the
afternoon airstrikes. Earlier Israeli strikes on Thursday killed one person.
Nancy Pelosi, the first female speaker of the United States House of
Representatives, has announced that she will not seek re-election, retiring
from Congress at the end of her term in early 2027. Pelosi, who has
been serving in Congress since 1987, paid tribute to her home city of San
Francisco in a video message on Thursday as she announced her decision.
The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed an appeal by a B.C. ostrich
farm to stay an order to cull its flock of more than 300 birds. A
spokesperson for Universal Ostrich Farms Inc. says its owners are
“devastated” by the top court’s dismissal, with the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency (CFIA) saying it will now be “moving forward” with a cull.
The case has drawn international support and attention, as well as
protesters to the farm, over the past 10 months. Around two dozen
supporters are on site this morning.
The Dallas Cowboys announced the death of defensive end Marshawn
Kneeland on Thursday morning. He was 24. Police in a Dallas suburb say
Kneeland was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound
after evading authorities in his vehicle and fleeing the scene of an accident
on foot. Frisco police said Thursday they are investigating a possible
suicide.

organization to pursue new opportunities in baseball. The 64-year-old
Mattingly spent the past three seasons with the Jays in the role. The

serving as skipper of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins
The San Diego Padres have stayed in-house for a successor to Mike
Shildt. The team named Craig Stammen its new manager. Stammen, 41,
had been serving as a special assistant in player development for the team
following his retirement as a player
