In local news, Shannonville Road was closed just south of the 401 at 7:45 this morning
after a major collision.
OPP posted to social media that both the north and southbound lanes of Shannonville
Road were closed between the 401 and Hinchey Road following a two-vehicle crash.
Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes as there are hydro wires down on the
road and there is no word yet on how long the closure may last. There is also no word
yet on injuries.
TRAFFIC
In more traffic news, Premier Doug Ford's government is earmarking $210 million for
municipalities to implement traffic-calming measures as its ban on speed cameras is set
to take effect.
Ford spent weeks railing against speed cameras, calling them a "cash grab" because of
the revenue they generate for municipalities. The premier has also said speed cameras
don't work to slow drivers down, but evidence collected by municipalities and Hospital
for Sick Children researchers found they do.
More than 20 mayors had urged Ford to tweak the program instead of scrapping it
entirely, noting that the move means road safety measures in their communities will now
be funded by all taxpayers instead of by drivers breaking the law by speeding.
Prince Edward County was considering installing Automated Speed Enforcement
cameras while Belleville instituted the speed camera system in July 2024. By May 31,
2025, Belleville had spent $250,000 for the system and operating cost while generating
over $1 million in fines.
BIRD FLU
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it has completed its active operations at
the British Columbia ostrich farm where its flock was culled by professional marksmen
following an outbreak of avian flu. The 314 carcases, eggs and other material were
disposed of through "deep burial" at a B.C. landfill.
The farm in south-central BC remains under quarantine and permission is required to
enter areas due to biocontainment measures.
As of this month over 11 million birds have been culled in BC due avian flu outbreaks.
His represents about 2/3 of the total numbers of birds removed in all of Canada.

UKRAINE
Russia launched a heavy drone and missile attack on Ukraine early on Friday, killing six
people in Kyiv and two more in the south in strikes on energy facilities, apartment
buildings and infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian forces used 430 drones and 18
missiles, making the attack one of the biggest on the capital so far. Kyiv was responding
with long-range strikes, he said, urging allies to toughen sanctions on Russia.
The air force said most of the drones and missiles were shot down, but officials said
falling debris and fires damaged high-rise apartments, a school, a medical facility and
administrative buildings across nine districts in the city of about three million.
And finally, even fast food restaurants are feeling the effects of rising prices. According
to an Angus Reid survey conducted on behalf of Restaurants Canada in June. 3/4 of
Canadians surveyed said they were dining out less frequently thanks to the rising cost
of living, with that figure increasing to 81 per cent of people aged 18 to 34.
So if you are getting more and more meal deals in your mail box, it is just the chains
trying to keep your business during difficult economic times. The days of change back
from you dollar for a burger, fries and drink are long gone.
