The County has compiled the results of a survey on County Road 49 and plans to share them with the Federal Government. It will be no surprise to local residents that respondents complained loudly about vehicle damage, safety concerns and the poor image the road presents to visitors. Mayor Ferguson said the survey and the results will be presented to the Federal government and are part of the County’s efforts to pressure the government to fund the balance of the 52 million dollar repair cost. The province has already agreed to pony up 20 million and the County has earmarked 7.8 million. County Road 49 was opened as a provincial highway in 1966 with most of its 18.4 kilometers paved in concrete and has reached the end of its useful life. The roadway was downloaded to the County in 1998 and was already in poor condition. Local council and residents have been pressuring the provincial and federal governments ever since for assistance in replacing the crumbling roadway.

The Federal House Committee on the status of women called for coercive control to be criminalized earlier today. House chair Marilyn Gladu said the change will give courts and law enforcement officials more tools to combat intimate partner violence. Similar changes have already been adopted in several other countries including the UK, Ireland and Australia. The Committee includes members of all parties and follows a private members bill that was passed by the House last year but failed to clear the senate before parliament was dissolved.

Most people know old comic books can be valuable but three brothers from San Francisco who found several old comics while cleaning out their recently deceased Mother’s attic hit the jackpot. They discovered a nearly pristine issue of Superman 1 which sold for more than $9 million US dollars breaking the record for the most expensive comic book ever. Experts identified the magazine as part of a small run of first edition Superman comics published in 1939 by Detective Comics based on a small advertisement included inside. The comic survived in excellent condition in spite of being stored in a cardboard box with no special protection. And in case you are wondering, the former record holder was Action Comics number 1 which introduced the man of steel. It fetched more the 6 million dollars last year.

Canada’s most decorated female Olympian, 25 year old swimmer Penny Oleksiak, has been given a two-year ban from competition for an anti-doping rule violation. The International Testing Agency announced the suspension today and said Oleksiak accepted the decision as a result of three whereabouts failures between October 2024 and June 2025. A whereabouts failure is a missed test or test filing deadline. Oleksiak has seven Olympic medals and nine world championships.
