The planning and development committee met last night and it was the last official meeting of the year for the councillors. The main item on the agenda was the Fawcettville development and councillors were clear last night with their 11:1 vote against the project going forward with Councillor Grosso being the solo voter in
favour. Eric Denoeden, owner of Hilden Homes, purchased the 5.6 acre property 10 years ago that’s located at the end of Fawcett Avenue , it’s a dead end street and has a flourishing forest containing butternut trees. It’s a working class
neighbourhood with 45 homes where many residents have lived for 50 or more years. Denoeden purchased with intent of building 85 units to include single homes, townhouses and semis but it became clear when Councillor Prinzen asked
questions that Denoeden plans to sell off the lots to builders. Some of the concerns raised by residents and most of the councillors include the need for a construction route other than Fawcett avenue, safety issues and the demise of the forest. It’s back to the drawing board for Hilden homes.

The Special investigations unit has cleared Belleville police in an incident at BGH. On October 9, 2025, a woman called police to report that her daughter was out of control and exhibiting combative behaviour towards her in the Belleville General Hospital parking lot. Officers apprehended the teenager under the Mental Health Act. During her apprehension, she resisted police and engaged in self-injurious behaviour by striking her head against her mother’s vehicle and subsequently against the ground while officers attempted to gain control and restrain her safely. The teenager was escorted into the hospital for medical evaluation. Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries – which included a review of the teenager’s medical records that contained no indication of any serious injury, Deputy Director O’Brien
was satisfied that the investigation should be discontinued. Given that the unit was without jurisdiction to investigate the incident, the file has been closed.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says U.S. President Donald Trump hasn’t given him any indication that he’s willing to walk away from the North American free trade deal that was struck during his first term at the White House. Carney met privately with Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Washington during the FIFA World Cup draw earlier this month. Much of that conversation laid out the broad strokes for coming discussions around the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which is up for review in 2026.

Canada’s legally binding climate target seems to be out of reach, new data released from Environment and Climate Change Canada suggests. The department’s greenhouse gas emission projections are a critical signal whether
the country is on track to achieve its climate goals. The report’s projections show Canada will fall well short of its 2030 climate goal — just halfway to its target of a 40 to 45 per cent reduction below 2005 levels. With the government’s current climate measures, Canada is on track to reduce its emissions by 21 per cent

below 2005 levels by the end of this decade. If the government implements additional climate policies, the report projects the country could see a 28 per cent reduction. The news comes just months after an unprecedented warning from
Canada’s leading climate think-tank which found the country won’t meet its 2030 target.
