Belleville police have arrested a man has been after an incident earlier this month involving an attempted arson. Police used surveillance video to identify the man who tried to set a rental property on fire on December 10th. The man allegedly lit a piece of trash on fire inside a rental house and tampered with the fire alarms but the fire was extinguished. The man has been charged with mischief endangering life and is scheduled to appear in court in February.
Kingston police are reminding people to secure their valuables after a rash of thefts from vehicles in the city. Most thefts have occurred in shopping mall parking lots and generally targeted visible items inside the vehicle. Police recommend removing packages or personal items when possible or storing them out of site and locking your car when it is unattended.
Three people were arrested on charges of drug trafficking in Tyendinaga Territory yesterday. Tyendinaga Police made the arrest with the assistance of the OPP Emergency Response Team. All three of the accused face charges for possession of cocaine and oxycodone for the purposes of trafficking as well as charges for possession of property obtained by crime. The accused are being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
The latest batch of files from the US department of Justice’s investigation of former sex offender Jeffrey Epstein contains multiple mentions of Donald Trump as well as references and photos of other famous men including Bill Clinton, Andrew Mountbatten and convicted Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard. Among the latest revelations are reports that Trump travelled on Epsteins private jet at least 8 times between 1993 and 1996 and a hand written note attributed to Jeffrey Epstein that appears to refer to Donald Trump and includes sexual references. The Justice Department has issued a statement saying the documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims about Trump. Trump has denied knowing about Epstein’s sex trafficking and has said he did not participate in any inappropriate conduct. Bill Clinton has also denied any inappropriate conduct. And neither man has been accused by any of the Epstein survivors who have come forward.
Canada’s GDP dropped by 0.3 percent in October, the largest decrease in more than three years, as the economy continued to adjust to US trade policy. Economists expected a drop of 0.2% after posting a 0.2% gain in September. November is also expected to post a slight gain. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklin said earlier this month that growth would likely continue to be weak for the rest of 2025 but that the economy has actually proven fairly resilient to US tariffs. The bank held the interest rate steady at 2.25 percent in December but experts expect it to increase by up to a quarter by mid 2026 if current trends continue.
And the Guinness World record for the most people participating in a chicken wing eating competition has been broken, appropriately enough, by the City of Buffalo, New York. 499 people chowed down on wings at the Buffalo Convention Center over the weekend to set a new record and raise funds for mental health. The event was sponsored by the Revelas Family Foundation as part of their annual Not so Silent Night Christmas fundraiser. The previous record was a paltry 379 wing eaters set in 2018 by Amazon Web Services.

Canadian ski cross racer Courtney Hoffos is definitely out for the Milan -Cortana Olympics. Hoffos crashed at a world cup event in Switzerland and required knee surgery that she confirmed will sideline her for the February Olympics. Hoffos won a silver in France earlier this month and hoped to improve on that performance in Italy.
As we head into the last night of regularly scheduled games before the NHL’s Christmas break, five Canadian teams will see action. The Leafs are at home tonight. A win against the Pittsburgh Penguins could lift them out of the basement of the Atlantic Division. That game started at 4 o’clock. The Canadiens are on the road. Montreal visits Boston for a 7 pm faceoff against the Bruins. Ottawa is at home to Buffalo. The Sens and the Sabres also get underway at 7. And Calgary is in Edmonton. The Flames and the Oilers drop the puck at 9 pm.
The Toronto Raptors are also busy tonight. They visit Miami for a 7:30 tip off against the Heat. The Raptors holding down fifth place and have a 567 win percentage so far this season but are still 6.5 games back of the high flying Detroit Pistons for first place in the Eastern Conference.
