Robert Hough, author of Anarchists in Love, based on the true story of Emma Goldman and Sasha Berkman who plotted a shocking act they hoped would ignite a worldwide anarchist revolution.

Marianne K. Miller, author of We Were the Bullfighters, a fictionalized account of the young Ernest Hemingway, assigned to cover the prison break by the notorious bank robber Red Ryan for the Toronto Daily Star. Music: Hemingway, Pork Belly Futures, sung by Paul Quarrington.

Merilyn Simonds, author of Walking with Beth: Conversations with My 100 year-old Friend. Three interviews worth repeating.

TOPICAL ISSUES & CURRENT EVENTS

Bob Rae has had a varied career as a politician and diplomat, most recently as Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations.  Now retired from that role, he is speaking out about the current state of world affairs, Canada’s foreign policy and the actions of President Donald Trump.

A review published in BMJ showed people quickly regained weight and worsened heart health when they stopped using weight loss drugs. Dr. Sonja Reichert, an Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine at Western University, treats obesity and diabetes and explains the implications of the report.

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, tasteless…and deadly. Tim Kraemer,  PEC’s interim Fire Chief, and Keira Schulert, Fire Prevention and Public Education Officer, discuss the new law which requires homes to install a carbon monoxide detector on every floor.

We speak with Cheryl Anderson of the South Shore Joint Initiative about the organization’s ongoing efforts engaging the public with the County’s south shore. We will talk about SSJI’s use of art and photography to support conservation and community awareness, including their first-ever Square-Foot Art Show later on this month. We’ll learn how individuals can support long-term stewardship and protection of this unique shoreline, and update listeners on the popular South Shore Footpath, … and lots more! 

HEALTH & WELLNESS

It’s a new year and resolutions often include plans to improve physical fitness.  We talk with Prince Edward Family Health Team Physiotherapist, Lisa Dow, about how to safely select, plan and maintain a year round exercise program that will improve your health and sense of well being.  We will also learn how the Prince Edward Family Health Team can help.

CONSUMERISM 

Kat Burns and Scott Whitelock of the Prince Edward Learning Centre join us to walk us through the changes they’ve made to the way their Fresh Good Food Market operates. This community initiative is making fresh, affordable produce more accessible for everyone across Prince Edward County, providing opportunities so people may polish and learn new skills while supporting our local farmers. Let’s learn how the market works and why it’s becoming such an important food source in our community.

Craig Mills speaks with Lisa Messina, Certified Somatic Practitioner & Holistic Movement Educator, and owner of the The Messina Movement studio in Bloomfield. Lisa’s 20 years of experience in the healing arts field 

THE COUNTY NATURALLY

When Snowy Owls meet planes, the result isn’t pretty. Massachusetts Audubon volunteer Norman Smith wanted to prevent owl/aircraft collisions at Boston’s Logan Airport. That facility has the highest numbers of the owls of any airport in North America. Along the way, Norman wrote the protocol for managing snowies at airports, and he turned his volunteer project into an impressive research study of the lives of these owls. He will be talking to Pamela Stagg about the majestic birds he loves so much.

COUNTY GROWS

Jane Thompson speaks with Nancy Griffin about her efforts to bring the excellent documentary,  We Lend a Hand: the Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes, to the Regent Theatre in late May.  This is the heartwarming story of young women, many of whom had never worked on a farm but who selflessly came to do the work of farmers who had gone to fight WW ll.

COUNTY PROFILE

Pearl Hucul speaks with 99.3 County FM volunteer, June Gill about her early years where she trained at  England’s London College of Fashion and volunteered with the Hampshire Police. After   working in different corporate environments overseas and in Canada, she finally landed here in the county where she can enjoy her love of dogs and nature to the fullest.

ARTSCENE

Paul Elster spent time at the Al Purdy A-frame as artist in residence. He talks with co-host Sarah Moran about the project he conceived there. He gathered stories from county people and photographed the storytellers using wet plate colloidal photography. He talks about the value of this analogue technique and the book he published called Silver Tongued.
