THE COUNTY WRITES….THE COUNTY READS

The theme for Black History Month 2026 is “ honouring Black brilliance across generations from nation builders to tomorrow’s visionaries.” Barbara Yebuga, author of Trailblazers in Canada writes of the little-known historical figures who have led the way for others. In addition to her memoir, Mayann Francis: An Honourable Life, the 31st Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia has written books about her childhood in two books for children, Mayann’s Train Ride and One Summer in Whitney Pier.

The County’s Community Initiatives Coordinator, Hilary Fennel, and Chair of the Mental Health and Problematic Substance Use Action Team, Lori Farrington, join us in studio to share observations this team has made and how agencies are collaborating to make a difference. We’ll explore issues ranging from mental health in youth and bullying to impaired driving, peer support, and access to services. It’s an important conversation about reducing stigma, strengthening families, and building a healthier, more connected community.

Jane will speak with Sud Kharal and Cole Robillard of the agronomy department at the County Farm Centre about their work with local field crop farms in preparing very precise fertilizer plans for the coming crop year based on detailed soil tests and other tools of precision agriculture.

For the next six weeks, commencing February 5th, 99.3 County FM explores topics and trends that can help you navigate through the maze of todays technology. In the first episode of our 6 week County FM series, Seniors and Technology – Embracing the World, you’ll hear various accounts about our relationship with technology, particularly our smartphones and other digital devices. Episode one features testimonials from people we spoke to at the Community Care for Seniors Fair in November.
