The council chamber was packed last night for the Planning and Development meeting and the hot topic was the Lakeside Retreat in Ameliasburg. The rezoning application was part of the Statutory public meeting and therefore no decision would be made. The property was originally a not for profit Salvation Army summer camp running July and August but the current owners are applying to run it year round and for profit. The camp sits on the shores of Roblin Lake and residents came out to oppose the rezoning with concerns of increased water consumption drawing on the lake, sewage, safety on the water, increased traffic and noise but what came out loud and clear is the lack of information and communication from the developer. Councillor Maynard made it clear that all comments can be emailed to the county and be documented. There were no decisions to be made on the application.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper said late Wednesday that Canada must urgently pivot in the face of an erratic U.S. president and reduce its dependence on the American market to protect its sovereignty and the continued functioning of the economy. Speaking at a gala in Ottawa to mark the 20 years since he formed a Conservative government, Harper said while he has “largely stayed silent” on U.S. aggression up until now, he feels compelled to speak out about what he described as an existential threat. He said the U.S. has become “hostile” and its leader, President Donald Trump, is openly questioning Canadian sovereignty, launching threats and betraying trade deals, which poses a “serious challenge” that demands a muscular response.

Canada Computers & Electronics continues to investigate a data breach affecting hundreds of people that has left customers frustrated over how the company handled the episode and communicated about it. Canada Computers said on Tuesday that its “current investigation indicates this incident affected 1,284 customers.” Canada Computers says it took immediate steps to contain the breach. It also notified authorities and launched an investigation. Affected customers were alerted on Jan. 25. Some received notification from the company about the breach and were then subsequently told that was not correct. The company confirms it sent messaging of this nature out and says it apologizes for the confusion.

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that the expiration of the U.S.- Russia arms treaty was regrettable, and urged the U.S. to resume dialogue with Russia on “strategic stability”. The New START treaty expired at the close of Wednesday, marking the end of over half a century of limits on both sides’ strategic nuclear weapons. Russia said on Wednesday it was open to security talks but would resolutely counter any new “threats”. Russia had suggested that both sides continue to honor the treaty’s core limits, and the Chinese foreign ministry urged Washington to respond constructively.

McMorris won bronze medals in slope style in each of his three previous Olympics… he spent the night at the Olympic Village. He’ll go through routine testing with our medical team in the Village [Thursday] and they’ll make a decision by 4 o’clock local time this afternoon on whether or not he can go for big air [qualifying] tonight.”
