Staffing changes at local health unit offices have been put on hold. Last week there were allegations by the Ontario Nurses’ Association, that five Southeast Public Health offices would be going “staffless” March 1, including Trenton and Napanee. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Piotr Oglaza says any movement of staff was under the umbrella of the Rural Services Delivery Strategy and there would not be a reduction of services. At the meeting, the board passed a motion to
engage a third-party consultant to begin work on a strategic plan and help develop a clear vision for the future. The board also passed a resolution that places a pause on further implementation of the Rural Services Delivery Strategy.
Southeast Public Health Chair Nathan Townend says the board will meet again next week.

Tyendinaga Township Council is against high-speed rail through the municipality. On Wednesday, councillors officially opposed a southern route of the Alto High Speed Rail Project. The electrified rail network is expected to connect Toronto and Quebec City, by running trains up to 300 kilometres an hour on designated tracks.
The main route would go from Toronto to Peterborough, then east to Ottawa, before heading towards Quebec. A southern route is proposed to bridge off at Norwood, cutting through Northumberland County, Quinte West, Tyendinaga
Township, and Lennox and Addington County. Tyendinaga Council is asking residents to participate in the consultation process.
South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk-yeol has been found guilty of masterminding an insurrection and sentenced to life in prison over his imposition of short-lived martial law in 2024. The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon

Ottawa will provide $50 million to help build the first Inuit-led university in Canada and more than $170 million for tuberculosis elimination, food security, and child and family supports in Inuit communities. The long-awaited funding, which is intended to improve the quality of life for Inuit and close long-standing gaps, is being welcomed by Inuit leaders after the dollar figures were notably absent from last fall’s federal budget. But they’re calling on Ottawa to go even further to address glaring inequities in their communities. The federal commitment of $50 million for the first Inuit-led university in the country set to be built in Arviat, Nunavut, will be funded through Budget 2025’s Build Communities Strong Fund. Support was promised in the budget, but it didn’t specify a dollar amount until now.
