Belleville and Quinte West are under a special weather statement tonight as an Alberta Clipper sweeps through the region. The storm is expected to dump between 10 and 15 cm of snow overnight on Belleville, Trenton and Brighton, but the County should see less severe weather. We can expect up to 5 cm of snow and less hazardous driving conditions. I will have more information with the weather report.

The Southeast Public Health Unit is advising local residents of potential measles exposure at three locations in Kingston recently. You may have been exposed if you visited Goodlife Fitness on Barrack Street in Kingston on the evening of February 9th between 8 and 11 pm, Kingston Hall at Queen’s University between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm on February 10th or the Metro store on Barrie Street in Kingston between 4:45 and 7 pm on February 13th. Measles is highly a highly contagious disease with potentially serious complications. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and a red rash. Anyone who was exposed and was either born before 1970 or has received at least two doses of measles vaccine is advised to monitor for symptoms for 21 days and to contact their health care provider before visiting a health care facility if symptoms appear. Anyone who was exposed and who was born after 1970 and has not received at least two doses of vaccine should contact the health unit and isolate for 21 days as well as monitoring for symptoms.

CFB Trenton will get 350 new housing units as part of the next phase of the Department of National Defence national housing program. The new units were announced today as part of the second phase of the military housing plan that will deliver more than 7,500 new residential units for Canadian forces personnel across Canada. The 800 phase one units are already under construction but priority was given to locations with critical housing shortages first. The second phase expands the program to other Canadian forces locations in need of additional housing. Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette was at Uplands Canadian Forces Support Group in Ottawa today for the announcement by Minister of National Defence, David McGuinty. Malette said he was pleased to see that the second phase will address the shortfall in military housing for personnel in the Bay of Quinte area.

the situation in Mexico is becoming more stable according to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. Anand said today that Canadians in Puerto Vallerta and Guadalajara can now travel to airports in those cities if they have a confirmed flight and it is safe to do so. Anand also said local authorities have reopened roads and airports and Canadians in Mexico report that stores, banks and other services are reopening. However, some areas remain under shelter in place orders and Global Affairs is still advising against non-essential travel to several Mexican states. Anand’s announcement comes as AirCanada, Westjet and Porter announced that flights would resume today while Flair plans to resume operations tomorrow. Violence errupted in several states in Mexico over the weekend following the death of cartel boss Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho”, at the hands of Mexican security forces.

Robert Carradine, son of actor John Carradine and brother to Keith and David Carradine, has died at the age of 71. Carradine first appeared in the early seventies in the TV western Bonanza. He later appeared on brother David’s hit show Kung Fu. His biggest success was as head nerd Lewis Skolnick in the hit movie Revenge of the Nerds. Carradine also scored a small screen hit opposite Hilary Duff in the Disney show Lizzie Maguire. Carradine suffered from bipolar disorder and reportedly took his own life.

Sports

The Wellington Dukes are in action tonight. The Dukes face the Collingwood Blues in Collingwood starting at 7:30. The Dukes and Blues have both clinched playoff berths but the Blues still haven’t locked in second place in the west and will be fighting hard to hold onto that spot.

In the NBA, the Raptors will host the Oklahoma Thunder tonight in Toronto. The Raptors are fifth in the east while the Thunder have the best record in the NBA and are holding down first in the western conference. Tip off is at 7:30 pm.

In baseball, spring training continues with the Blue Jays facing the Yankees today in Grapefruit league action in Dunnedin. First pitch went out at 1:07 pm.

And International Ice Hockey Federation President Luc Tardif said today he expects the three on three overtime format to continue for the Olympics. In spite of complaints about the format, Tardif said it is the best option given the tight scheduling and a desire to avoid shoot out overtime decisions. Both men’s and women’s Olympic finals were decided using the three on three format this year with Canada losing both games to the US.
