Local School Board Trustee Rachel Prinzen was in Divisional Court recently for a hearing involving the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board. Prinzen represents the CML Snider School, Kente Public School, Massassaga-Rednersville Public School, and Sophiasburgh Central School. Since November, 2024, she has been barred from meetings twice for a total of 180 days. The board of trustees says she violated their Code of Conduct by breaching confidentiality and making defamatory allegations. Prinzen represented herself in Divisional Court, describing efforts to discredit her and have her stop asking questions about board governance, minute-taking, and executive compensation. She also alleged issues with procedural fairness, heavy-handedness, Charter of Rights violations, accountability, and transparency. Prinzen told the judges she felt she had exhausted internal avenues to address concerns and felt she had a duty to take them further, to the Minister of Education, the parliamentary assistants to the Minister, and local MPPs. Both Prinzen and the School Board are seeking financial compensation and other outcomes. The Divisional Court judges have reserved their decision.

The Ontario government has announced funding to promote cultural tourism in the County. And $25,000 will go to the County Stage Company for its Expanded Repertory Festival and Fall Solo Series, scheduled for June 10th to Nov. 11th this year.

The Quinte Region Landlords Association has formed a province-wide alliance to sound the alarm about proposed regulations that threaten both rental housing providers and tenants.  Ontario’s Bill 10, the Protect Ontario Through Safer Streets and Stronger Communities Act, proposes to hold rental housing providers liable for illegal drug activity on their properties, and puts the onus on them to prove they didn’t know about it. The Bill carries penalties of up to $250,000, property seizure, and possible jail time. The informal alliance opposing the legislation includes private and not-for-profit housing providers, as well as tenant groups.
