THE COUNTY WRITES….THE COUNTY READS

Adam Shoalts is a professional explorer, adventurer and author. His best-seller, Where the Falcon Flies: A 3,400 Kilometre Odyssey From My Doorstep to The Arctic, was the winner of County Reads 2024. He describes the dangers faced and obstacles overcome on his gruelling 3-month trek as he followed the migratory path of the peregrine falcon. A program worth repeating! TOPICAL ISSUES & CURRENT EVENTS

Colorectal Cancer Screening: Dr. Darren Brenner, Department of Oncology, University of Calgary, and Chrissy Moutsatsos, diagnosed with colorectal cancer one year ago, are among those calling for the age of screening to be lowered to 45.
Community Centre: Hri Neil of the Department of Illumination and Christine Durant of the Prince Edward Learning Centre describe plans for a classroom portable which will become a community centre for Macaulay Village. Council agreed to designate it as a project of community interest.
Trash Bash is back: Evan Nash has details on the 5th Annual Owen Jones Memorial Trash Bash, April 25.

SERVICES

The Elderberry Fund is a donor advised fund administered by the County Foundation providing grants to support important local causes including food security, arts and culture, health and human services, agriculture, and the environment. We speak with Elderberry Fund Donor Sarah and The County Foundation’s Executive Director, Dominique Jones, about how TCF grant recipients are selected and talk about some of the organizations that have recently received funding.
HEALTH & WELLNESS

Building on the important conversation we shared last week with the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan’s Action Team addressing Violence Against Women and Domestic Abuse, we’re continuing that dialogue focusing on the mental health impacts of sexual assault. This conversation with Psychiatrist, Dr. Joe Burley, will take a deeper look at how trauma can affect individuals in both the short and long term and the pathways toward healing and recovery. We’ll also explore how friends, family, and communities can offer meaningful, supportive responses, while helping to break down stigma and common misconceptions.

This week, The County, Naturally begins a new adventure called Friends in Nature. Throughout the year, Pamela Stagg will invite nature-related groups to host programs. To kick off the series, Pamela will hand the microphone to Cristina Petrucci, Communications & Advocacy Lead at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory. She will be talking to Ashley Jensen, the Observatory’s Station Manager about migration — a phenomenon which she describes as magical and awe-inspiring.
