US President Donald Trump continued to ratchet up the pressure on Iran to agree to a ceasefire deal. Trump is holding to his deadline of 8 pm tonight after which he is threatening a massive escalation in the bombing campaign against Iran including targeting civilian infrastructure. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has joined other world leaders in calling for both Iran and the United States to follow international law and work to deescalate the current conflict. Carney said in Brampton today that he supports French President Macron’s comments calling for a return to stability, calm and a return to peace while Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said in Vancouver today that Canada is focusing on deescalation and working with Gulf countries that are threatened by Iran. Targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure is considered a war crime under international law.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also shared a bit more information today on how the Liberals plan to spend their $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund. Carney said the federal government would spend 27.8 billion over the next 10 years building infrastructure including roads, bridges, water and sewer systems across the country. Another $6 billion would be earmarked for major local projects like community centres. The remainder of the fund will be available for matching provincial funds to build new housing and health care facilities. Carney was in Brampton to announce $64 million in funding for a recreation centre in that city.
And festival organizers in London, England have thrown in the towel and canceled a planned concert that would have featured American rapper Ye. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has been refused entry into the UK. British officials barred Ye from entering the country because of antisemitic comments he has made in the past. Among other incidents, he has denied the holocaust happened, expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and posted images of a swastika inside a star of David. Ye was to have headlined the Wireless musical festival but sponsors began dropping out after Ye’s appearance was announced. Lacking a headliner and without major sponsors, Festival Republic, the organization behind the concert, decided to cancel the entire three day event.
