A 38-year-old person is dead and four people were taken to hospital, including two police officers, after two separate crashes took place in the same area on Highway 401 in Pickering early Sunday morning. OPP officers responded around 2:40 a.m. to reports of a crash between a pickup truck and passenger vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Westney Road, according to an OPP news release. The pickup truck was travelling in the wrong direction and going west in the eastbound lanes. The OPP said the 41-year-old driver of the pickup truck was charged with dangerous and impaired operation causing death.

More information is emerging from the incident at the White House Correspondent’s dinner on Saturday evening. The man accused of opening fire at the dinner railed against Trump administration policies and referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” in writings sent to family members minutes before an attack that authorities increasingly believe was politically motivated. The writings, sent shortly before shots were fired Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, made repeated references to President Donald Trump without naming him directly and alluded to grievances over a range of administration actions, including U.S. strikes on boats accused of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The attacker attempted to charge toward the cavernous ballroom at the Washington Hilton but was tackled to the ground in a violent scene that resulted in shots being fired, while Trump was hurried off the stage unharmed and guests ducked for cover beneath their tables. It is expected that the man will appear in court today to face multiple charges.

Iran’s foreign minister briefly visited Islamabad yesterday as Pakistan’s political and military leadership scrambled to reignite ceasefire negotiations between Tehran and Washington, but President Donald Trump said they could talk by phone instead.

Abbas Araghchi had left Pakistan’s capital late the previous day, creating confusion around an expected second round of talks there, but he returned before continuing on to Moscow on Sunday. He had been in Oman, which previously mediated talks and is on the other side of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Indirect talks between the two sides were ongoing, according to Pakistani officials.

Let’s tip-off with basketball.  Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes had 23 points apiece as the Toronto Raptors withstood a late charge by the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 93-89 win on Sunday in Game 4 of their playoff series. The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2 with Game 5 in Cleveland on Wednesday. Game 6 will be back at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on Friday.

Moving over to the NHL playoffs the Montreal Canadiens welcomed the Tampa Bay Lightning to Centre Bell for game three of their series. The Habs scored the first two, but the Bolts scored the next three to take the win 3-2 and tie the series at 2. Turning to Edmonton and Anaheim, the Ducks also came back from a two-goal deficit to win 4-3 in overtime and take a 3-1 series lead.

In baseball action, Jesus Sanchez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and added a two-run homerun to help the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. The win gives the Jays their second consecutive series win for the first time this year and lifts the team’s record to 12-15. Let’s hope the momentum continues as the Red Sox will be in Toronto for 3 games starting tonight.
