Four Canadians who disembarked the cruise ship at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak arrived in Canada on Sunday and will continue their quarantine. The Canadians, who were set to arrive in British Columbia later Sunday after landing in Quebec, are to isolate in B.C. because they have connections with the province – this according to B.C’s health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. The Canadians were among 130 passengers on the MV Hondius, who exited the vessel at a port in Tenerife, an island in Spain’s Canary Islands early Sunday. They were assessed as asymptomatic before they took off in a plane chartered by the Public Health Agency of Canada and Global Affairs Canada, with support from the Canadian Armed Forces. A PHAC officer ensured public health measures, including masking and physical distancing, were being followed on the flight. They have been following strict isolation protocols on the MV Hondius since early May, when the World Health Organization declared the outbreak on the ship. Henry said when they arrive in British Columbia, they will be taken to their lodgings. Henry reassured people there is no risk of hantavirus spread after their arrival.
Turning to the war in Iran, the country sent its response to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal via Pakistani mediators yesterday, and wants negotiations to focus on permanently ending the war, but U.S. President Donald Trump quickly rejected it as “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” without providing details. According to state TV, Iran seeks to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, where Israel is fighting the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, and to ensure the security of shipping. Washington’s latest proposal addressed a deal to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and roll back Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, the fragile ceasefire that began on April 8 — and was later extended by Trump — was tested on Sunday when a drone ignited a small fire on a ship off Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait reported drones entering their airspace. The U.A.E. said it shot down two drones and blamed Iran. No casualties were reported, and no one immediately claimed responsibility.
And finally, you may have seen this image on the internet over the weekend – in Delta, British Columbia, police say a motorcyclist is in hospital after a crash that left his bike suspended from a traffic light. They say in a news release that members from the department responded to the scene at the 7100 Block of Scott Road just before 3 p.m. on Saturday. The statement says the motorcycle driver sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle did not suffer any injuries. Speed is believed to be a factor in the accident. If you haven’t seen the photo of the Suzuki suspended 4 or 5 metres above the ground, you really should do a search for it. Remarkable.
