News
In local news, Prince Edward County has provided an update on remediation efforts following a fuel spill that led to a contamination incident that we reported on last week. In a release, the county said testing was completed at the outflow to Picton Bay during the spill.
Staff determined that the material was diesel fuel from a spill on Picton Main Street near the intersection of Bowery Street. The county says that proactive testing of the water is ongoing. Drinking water supplied by the Picton Water Treatment Plant remains safe for consumption.
The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) continues to investigate the cause of the spill. Anyone with information is asked to contact MECP by filing a report online or calling 1.866.663.8477.You can remain anonymous
ARREST
Still on the local scene, Prince Edward County OPP has charged one person following a motor vehicle collision involving multiple parked vehicles in Picton that occur on Tuesday evening. Officers responded to a collision at the intersection of York Street and Elk Street after multiple members of the public reported that a vehicle had struck unoccupied parked vehicles.
As a result of the investigation, the driver was arrested and charged with impaired and dangerous driving offences. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date. The individual’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
VIRUS
More Canadians are being contacted after having been on the same flights as a confirmed hantavirus case. Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Joss Reimer said during a news conference yesterday that local public health units are contacting 26 people who were on the same planes as a hantavirus case.
The deadly hantavirus outbreak that started on board luxury cruise ship MV Hondius. The 26 individuals are considered low-risk because there’s no evidence that they sat near or had any direct or prolonged contact with the hantavirus case. Reimer did not say what provinces these people live in.
FBI
When FBI Director Kash Patel visited Hawaii last summer, the FBI took pains to note the director was not on vacation, highlighting his walking tour of the bureau’s Honolulu field office and meetings with local law enforcement.
Left out of the FBI news releases was an exclusive excursion that Patel took days later, when he participated in what government officials described as a “VIP snorkel” around the USS Arizona in an outing co-ordinated by the military. The sunken battleship entombs more than 900 sailors and marines at Pearl Harbor.
With few exceptions, snorkeling and diving are off-limits around the USS Arizona. The battleship, now a military cemetery reachable only by boat, has stood as one of the country’s most hallowed sites since Japan bombed and sank it in 1941. Marine archaeologists and crews from the National Park Service make occasional dives at the memorial to survey the condition of the wreck. Other dives have been conducted to inter the remains of Arizona survivors who wanted to rest eternally with their former shipmates.
And finally, a bit of a reminder for this holiday weekend. Municipal offices, libraries, museums and recreation facilities will be closed on Monday.
Residents and visitors are reminded that re-enactors with the “Gathering of Friends Rendezvous” will be firing muskets and a cannon at the Ameliasburgh Heritage Village today until Sunday.
Cannon fire will take place on Saturday every 20 minutes from noon to 1 pm. The re-enactors will not be firing live rounds of ammunition during the event.
ENJOY THE WEEKEND!

Outside of the playoff scene, the NHL trend to have former players take up key positions with teams continue. Hall of Fame twins Daniel and Hendrik Sundin have been named by the Vancouver Canucks as co-presidents of hockey operations. Fans will be looking for the pair to help turnaround the woeful play of the team who have failed to make the playoffs 5 of the last 6 years and finished a distant last place this season.
