Dr. K. Sonu Gaind, co-author of Unravelling MAiD in Canada,

responds to the recommendation by the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying that the federal government

“indefinitely exclude” MAID for people with mental illness as their sole underlying condition.
Flora Sonneveld, a graduate of Bayside Secondary School, has been awarded the $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship.

SERVICES

The new Mohawk (Kenhtè:ke) Language and Cultural Centre in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory is officially open.  The new facility provides a single immersive space for teaching and speaking the Mohawk (Kanien’kéha) language to students ranging from early childhood to adult learners and incorporates traditional design elements of Haudenosaunee culture.  We talk with Callie Hill, CEO of the Mohawk (Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na) Language and Cultural organization, about the design of the new centre and how it will help to increase the number and fluency of Mohawk (Kanien’kéha) speakers.

CONSUMERISM

In this fourth episode of World of Wine with sommelier, Jay Whiteley, we explore the fascinating world of Chardonnay—one of the most versatile and widely planted white wine grapes on the planet. From its origins in Burgundy to the many regions where it now thrives, Jay will discuss how Chardonnay has evolved over time, the diverse styles it produces, and why it remains a favourite among wine lovers. He’ll also share expert tips on food pairings with the various styles of Chardonnay. 

PRIDE MONTH

We’re excited to have James Woo on board the Tuesday Grapevine team of interviewers. In their first interview, James visits the Picton Library to speak with Joanna Howard and Liz Zylstra of the PEC Public Library and Archives to discuss the library’s Discover YOUth program. Let’s learn about the programming of this weekly drop-in, driven by youth in an all-inclusive safer space for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and allies, its importance, and what they plan for the future.

Pearl Hucul speaks with Mazin Altoumah about how he and his wife, Nada Qassim, who spent 25 years in engineering in Montreal and Toronto, decided to purchase land in the county in 2020 and develop Violet Hill Lavender in Waupoos.

Guest host Geoff Craig will talk to long-time trail walker,  Joe Dale, about his time spent walking the Bruce Trail from end to end, and why his  Bruce Trail experience has made him such a fan of the South Shore Footpath. Geoff is a member of the Board of Directors for the South Shore Joint Initiative.

COUNTY GROWS

JaneThompson will speak with Leaha Nurse and Lynn Ward about two open agricultural events coming later in July.  Leaha will extend an invitation to everyone interested in modern dairy farming (and a great meal!)to attend the Dairy Twilight Meeting on July 16th while Lynne Ward gives us the details of the 4-H Discovery Day for 6 to 12 year olds on July 23.

COUNTY PROFILE

Gage Broderick speaks with newest County FM employee, Duncan Smith. Duncan is currently a student at Trent University in Peterborough where he is about to go into his third year of an Undergraduate level Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Major in Cultural Studies with a Specialization in Film, Video & Media. Whether it’s behind or in front of the camera, Duncan puts his education to good use as he assists with various production and admin responsibilities at County FM. Catelyn Thornton speaks with Janna Smith, Executive Director of County Arts, about the 33rd annual Art in the County, a very popular juried show and sale featuring County artists. Joining them will be the show’s two renowned jurors, Stanzie Tooth and John Gagne, discussing the process of jurying an art show. Also, the much anticipated announcement of the show’s winners will be made on air. 

SPORTS ROUNDUP  

The Prince Edward County Sports Hall of Fame showcases memorable athletes and events.

I Know That Voice

I Know That Voice pays respects to a voice acting veteran whom we lost recently, Mr. Tom Kane. Kane’s voice is remembered by children of the 2000s for his presence in several projects such as The Powerpuff Girls and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, among many others. Gage Broderick and guest host Duncan Smith dive into the life and career of the late great, Tom Kane.

The Bay of Quinte Regional Pride Celebrations in Picton June 20

This year’s main festival is hosted in Prince Edward County.  Saturday, June 20 Pride Parade: 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM along Picton Main Street (moving from the Lake Street parking lot to the Crystal Palace).Pride in the Park: a free community event at the Crystal Palace from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and Pride After Dark: An evening afterparty hosted at Base 31.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is Sunday June 21

It is an official day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. Listen throughout the day as we highlight Indigenous artists.
