Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump have agreed to intensify trade talks ahead of a 30 day tariff deadline set by Trump. While Carney indicated that he and Trump are hoping to find a resolution to ongoing trade issues, he also said that the Premiers and he will be looking at all options for responding to Trump’s 50% tariff threat should the tariffs come be applied. US trade officials said the threatened tariffs are a valid response to Canadian restrictions on US automobiles, dairy products and alcohol while Canadian officials pointed to US restrictions on Canadian automobiles, steel, aluminum and softwood lumber.
Prince Edward County is under an Environment Canada thunderstorm watch this afternoon which could extend into the evening. We could see strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and hail which will make travel difficult and could disrupt hydro lines and cause local flooding. I will have more information with the weather.
Belleville Police have arrested a man in connection with a vehicle that was stolen last weekend. On Sunday morning police were called after a man failed to pay for gas in the Bell Boulevard area. While investigating the theft, officers discovered that the man was driving a stolen vehicle. Yesterday morning, a person matching the description of the suspect was observed in the Cannifton Road and Bell Boulevard area. Officers were able to apprehend the man after a short foot chase. A 51 year old Kingston man has been charged with a number of offences and is being held pending a bail hearing.
Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue will be practicing tanker shuttles this evening in the Consecon area. The practice session involves tankers loading water at two hydrants hear the Consecon Fire Station and shuttling the water to a pumper at the test site on Stinson Block Road. The tankers will make a number of trips and will be using their emergency lights but no sirens. During the exercise, Stinson block road will be reduced to one lane near the test site. The exercise will begin around 6 pm and continue for about 2 hours. Local residents may notice some water pressure fluctuations and discoloration but water will remain safe to drink. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and exercise caution while driving along the shuttle route.
Canada has joined the joint British, Japanese and Italian program to develop the next generation of stealth fighter jets by 2035. Initially, Canada will sit as an observer with the actual development and decision making being done by the UK, Japan and Italy. However, Royal Canadian Air Force Lt.-Gen. Jamie Speiser-Blanchet said the agreement allows Canada to attend confidential briefings and share technical knowledge. He said Canada may become a full partner at a later date, including building and flying the new jet. The agreement was announced by Defence Minister David McGuinty from London and is seen as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategy to diversify Canada’s defense industry in the face of US threats to NATO and Canadian sovereignty.
And a Regina artist is happy to have her iphone back after it was sucked out of an airplane. Heather Cline uses her phone to record images from a two seater plane flown by her husband. She uses the images as references for her paintings. But last Friday she was using the plane’s photographic window when the airstream sucked her phone right out of the case. The phone fell 2 kilometers to the ground and Cline assumed it was gone but she activated the “find my phone” feature and sure enough, after driving more than 100 km from their home to the where the phone fell, she and her husband managed to find it. They were even more astonished that the phone was undamaged. Cline says in the future she may have to cable tie the phone to her hand.

FIFA announced today that an investigation is underway into unsportsmanlike behaviour by Argentine players following their World Cup loss to Spain on Sunday. Videos appear to show Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes pushing Spain’s Garcia by the throat and knocking Spaniard Sub Gavi to the ground. Argentine Defender Nahuel Molina also appeared to hit Spanish captain Rodri in the stomach. The Argentinians stood with their backs to the Spanish team when they received the World Cup Trophy in a deliberate sign of disrespect and are facing discipline for displaying a banner claiming the Falklands Islands for Argentina after their match with England.
In CFL news, Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander, Alouettes running back Travis Theis and Calgary running back Dedrick Mills have been named the league’s top players for Week 7. Alexander threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns in the Alouettes’ win over the Stampeders. Theis rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown as well as catching the ball for another 49 yards in the same game. And Mills ran for 130 yards, two touchdowns and 38 receiving yards for the losing Stampeders.
In Major League Baseball action, the Tampa Bay Rays are in town for the second game of a four game series with the Jays. Toronto will be trying to recover from last night’s 7 – 1 drubbing by the Rays when they send Kevin Gausman to the mound against Drew Rasmussen for Tampa Bay. First pitch goes out at 7:07 pm in Toronto.
