In local news, Prince Edward County celebrated the opening of a new youth-led canteen at Picton Skate Park.
The canteen, located at Prince Edward County Fairgrounds, is being operated in collaboration with Greater Than County Youth Collective, a local non-profit organization, and the Prince Edward Learning Centre (PELC).
While the canteen has been operating since July 14, the county says its official opening will take place today.
The canteen offers healthy food for park visitors and gives youth the opportunity to gain work experience and develop leadership skills.
The canteen is open seasonally and will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October 2026.
INVESTMENT
Still on the local scene, the provincial government is investing nearly $120,000 through the Rural Ontario Development (ROD) program to support economic growth and long-term prosperity across Prince Edward County. Through the first intake of the ROD program, the Province is supporting the following local projects:
• $50,000 for Prince Edward County to develop a Community Improvement Plan that would provide the municipality new tools to support business development activities.
• $50,000 for the Prince Edward County Chamber of Commerce to work with local stakeholders in co-ordinating a four-season plan for the local visitor economy.
• $10,000 for Lakecroft to improve accessibility at its event venue and lakefront accommodations property in Cherry Valley.
• $10,000 for the County Cooperage to provide washroom accessibility, supporting visitation totheir barrel-making facility in Cherry Valley.
Belleville, Trenton and Quinte West will also benefitting from the overall $20 million ROD program.
RECALL
In automotive news, more than 20,000 Ford vehicles in Canada are being recalled, with the manufacturer noting issues in two popular models. Similar recalls in the U.S. have affected more than 134,000 vehicles.
In separate recalls, the company noted issues with the rear quarter window glass trim in the Mustang Mach-E for 2023 and 2024 model years. Also there is an issue with the rear-view camera image with the F-150 and F-250 Super Duty for 2021 to 2026 model years.
The company stated that it would notify owners by email and send a wireless over-the-air software update to eligible vehicles.
JOBS
Canada’s jobs numbers beat economists’ expectations in July, while the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in two years, Statistics Canada said on Friday.
The agency’s labour force survey said Canada added a surprising 75,000 jobs in July, blowing past expectations of economists in a Reuters poll, which predicted a modest 15,000-job gain. Those jobs were split between full- and part-time work.
Statistics Canada said the country is now up 181,000 jobs since April, and 196,000 from a year ago.
Canada’s unemployment rate ticked down 0.1 percentage points from June to 6.4 per cent. Statistics Canada said the unemployment rate is also down half a percentage point from a year ago as more people who are looking for work have been successful at finding jobs than this time last year
And finally, The County of Prince Edward will be hosting a blitz on e-waste during the month of August. Proceeds from all materials dropped off at municipal e-waste collection sites during the month will be donated to the Wellington Rotary Club. Electronic waste can be brought to the Sophiasburgh, South Marysburgh and Wellington municipal waste sites during regular hours of operation.
Hazardous waste is not accepted at municipal waste sites. Hazardous waste can be dropped of at the hazardous waste depot in Belleville or brought to the upcoming mobile collection event on Saturday, September 12 at the Wellington and District Community Centre.

In major League baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays are in Philadelphia this weekend to battle the Phillies. The Blue Jays still sit at the bottom of the AL east while the Phillies are in second spot in the NL east.
FOOTBALL
In the CFL tonight, the winless Ottawa Redblack travel to Regina to take on the West second place team, the Saskatchewan Roughrider. Tomorrow, the Montreal Alouettes host the West leading Edmonton Elks at 3:00 pm. Tomorrow night the Hamilton Tiger Cats are in Vancouver to face the BC Lions at 7:00 local time.
F1
Though there are still a couple of weeks to go before the next F1 race, the FIA executive are looking to finish the 2026 season in Europe, even if it means a race in the snow.
F1’s season is currently scheduled to finish with races in Qatar on Nov. 29 and Abu Dhabi on Dec. 6, but both look increasingly unlikely to go ahead due to the war in Iran. F1 would need to rearrange at least one of those due to the commercial agreement it has with teams and broadcasters.
Imola in northern Italy is the top of the list of contingencies should an alternate destination be needed. A second replacement venue is also being explored.
F1 is waiting until the middle of September before making a call on the final Middle East races, but it has already worked on a deal which saw the Bahrain Grand Prix relocated to Malaysia for Oct. 4 for the same reason.
