Police say a Vancouver man has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder after an SUV was driven into a crowd at a Filipino community festival Saturday evening, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more. Police say they weren’t aware beforehand of specific threats against the Lapu Lapu Day festival, which is named after an Indigenous resistance fighter in the Philippines who fought against Spanish colonization in the 16th century. According to police, the crash happened in East Vancouver, just before 8 p.m. local time on Saturday, and is not being investigated as an act of terrorism. Yesterday afternoon, 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo was charged with eight counts of second-degree murder in relation to the crash, according to police. Lo appeared briefly in court for a bail hearing, did not request bail and will remain in custody until his next appearance, scheduled for May 26th. More charges are expected.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NBC on Sunday that the Trump administration will decide this week whether to continue pursuing a negotiated settlement in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or to turn its attention to other matters. Mr. Rubio did not give further details of the state of the talks. It was not clear if the timeline he offered was meant to pressure Ukraine and Russia to agree to enter direct discussions toward a deal, or whether President Trump and his aides were seriously considering walking away.
Finally, more than 220 Cardinals are meeting at the Vatican today to decide the starting date of the Conclave to elect the new Pope. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to take part in the conclave, which will begin its deliberations after the completion of nine days of official mourning for Francis. Jean-Claude Hollerich, a cardinal from Luxembourg, has said he expects the conclave to start within a day or two of the end of the mourning period on 4 May. German cardinal Reinhard Marx said on Saturday the conclave would last just “a few days”. The cardinal-electors – about 80% of whom were appointed by Francis – will cast four votes a day until one candidate secures a two-thirds majority. The news that a successor has been chosen will be communicated by white smoke emitted from the Sistine Chapel.
Sports
Let’s start with hockey. The NHL playoffs continued yesterday as the Montreal Canadiens welcomed the Washington Capitals to Centre Bell, and looked good heading into the third with a 2-1 lead. Sadly for the Habs the Caps’ Brandon Duhaime had other plans, scoring two in the third to lead Washington to a 5-2 win and a 3-1 series lead.
Kyle Connor opened the scoring for the Winnipeg Jets as they faced the St. Louis Blues in game 4 of their series, but the Blues scored the next 5 to take a 5-1 win and tie the series at 2.
In the third game, Andrei Schivnikov opened the scoring at 52 seconds of the first on his way to a hat trick, giving his Carolina Hurricanes a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils and a 3-1 series lead. In the late game, Leon Draisitl scored at 18.18 of overtime to give the Oilers a 4-3 win over the Kings and tie that series at 2.
Not a great day for the Blue Jays yesterday, giving up 16 runs over two games against the New York Yankees. Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman was tossed in the third inning of game 1 following an altercation with the umpire – this after throwing 53 pitches in the inning to tie a team record. Jays manager John Schneider was thrown out early in the 5th for arguing a call. The Jays lost 11-2. The second game was close through the sixth, before Aaron Judge broke a 1-1 tie with his 8th homerun of the season. The Yanks went on to win the game 5-1.
Turning to the English Premier League, Liverpool Football Club finally clinched the League title that has seemed like a foregone conclusion for most of the season. The Mersey-side powerhouse has only lost three games of the last 34 and has sealed their record-tying 20th title with 4 games remaining in the season, after 5-1 victory over Tottenham.
Finally, in NBA playoff results, the New York Knicks took a 3-1 series lead over the Detroit Pistons with a 94-93 win. The Timberwolves beat the Lakers 116-113 to take a 3-1 lead in that series, the Celtics beat the Magic 107-98 to take a 3-1 lead in their series, and in the late game, the Pacers smashed the Bucks 129-103 for a 3-1 lead in that series.
