A South Korean satellite has captured images of the mark left on the moon when a SpaceX rocket crashed into it on Wednesday. The evidence is a smudge, dark in some photos and light in others, that’s not visible in other photos of the same area on the moon’s surface near the Einstein Crater. The Korean lunar orbiter Danuri (also known as the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, or KPLO) captured before and after images of the SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage colliding with the lunar surface as it headed toward the moon, the Korean AeroSpace Administration (KASA) reported on X.
The second stage of a SpaceX rocket launched in January 2025 had been drifting off-course for the past year after carrying two lunar landers into space. It made an unintentional but fully anticipated crash onto the moon on Wednesday, at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/hour. The plume of debris created by the crash was observed by telescopes on Earth, confirming the crash occurred even before the new images were released.
The Parole Board of Canada has granted six more months of day parole for Terry Douglas Kennedy, one of the men convicted in the 1991 murder of Kingston gas station owner Yvonne Rouleau, despite finding he experienced a significant setback during his first year in the community by using crystal methamphetamine. The decision comes after Kennedy completed one year on day parole after spending more than three decades in prison for the brutal 1992 robbery and murder of Rouleau at Nozzles Gas Bar in downtown Kingston. During the latest review period, Kennedy’s parole was temporarily suspended after staff at his community-based residential facility reported unusual behaviour and observed white powder residue on his clothing. The board said that although he initially denied using drugs, Kennedy later admitted using crystal methamphetamine.
Following the suspension, Kennedy returned to the halfway house under tighter restrictions, including a behavioural plan limiting his movements as well as participation in additional substance abuse programming. Earlier this year, the board also imposed a new condition prohibiting him from consuming, purchasing, or possessing illicit drugs. In its concluding assessment, the board acknowledged both the seriousness of Kennedy’s original offence and the concerns arising during his first year on release. Nevertheless, it concluded his current risk can continue to be managed in the community through close supervision and ongoing treatment.
A wanted man has been charged in Belleville. At 5:37 p.m. Wednesday, city police officers responded to a call for service at a residence in the east end and spoke with a man and a woman. During the interaction, officers learned the man was wanted on an outstanding Belleville Police Service arrest warrant for robbery with a weapon. As a result, a 35-year-old Belleville man of no fixed address was arrested on the strength of the warrant and held for a bail hearing.
Quinte Conservation is currently operating watershed dams to manage a quick increase in water levels brought on from last weekend’s weather events. Over the weekend, the watershed experienced widespread rainfall from a low-pressure system which brought 40-50 mm of rain. In addition, isolated thunderstorms, notably over the Black River in Tweed brought an additional 20-30 mm of rain which resulted in some areas receiving upwards of 80 mm of rainfall. The sudden rise in levels on the Black River is likely due to a strong, but isolated thunderstorm combined with a sudden release of water from a breached beaver dam. Quinte Conservation does not forecast or monitor beaver dam breaches.
Rivers have all peaked and there is no further risk of riverine flooding. Both lakes and rivers are currently above seasonal levels but remain below levels that would impact buildings. Areas along the Moira River and Stocco Lake have experienced a sharp rise in water levels which will respond quickly and peak within in the next few hours. Residents are advised to remain cautious around fast flowing water until levels have resumed to normal seasonal levels (approximately 2-3 days).
