Prince Edward County has made an important donation toward fire safety
throughout the Quinte region while at the same time honouring a local firefighter.
At its meeting earlier this week, council approved the donation of a 2000 GMC
pumper truck to the Hastings and Prince Edward Mutual Fire Aid Training Complex
located in Trenton. The complex provides firefighter training to departments
throughout the region, including for Prince Edward County. The pumper was
donated in memory of the late Jim Young, a former county firefighter and Chief
Training Officer, who finished his career as a Deputy Chief in Belleville.
Evacuation orders have been issued for 371 properties in Abbotsford, B.C., as
heavy rains inundated southern B.C. and led to all major highways leading out of
the Lower Mainland to be closed. Just after 11 p.m. PT, the City of Abbotsford said
that residents of hundreds of properties in the Sumas Prairie West area must
leave immediately due to the risk of flooding. Officials said the orders were issued
after talks with the province and neighbouring Whatcom County south of the
border, where the Nooksack River was among numerous waterways in
Washington state to reach flood levels.
The U.S. has seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, U.S.
President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, a move that sent oil prices higher
and sharply escalated tensions between Washington and Caracas. Trump has
been pressuring Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to step down did not offer
additional details. Asked what would happen with the oil, he said: “We keep it, I
guess.” Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of U.S. military intervention in
Venezuela. This incident was the first known action against an oil tanker since he
ordered a massive military buildup in the region. The U.S. has carried out strikes
against suspected drug vessels, which raised concerns among lawmakers and
legal experts.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado appeared in public for the
first time in 11 months Thursday after a daring escape from her homeland when
she emerged from a hotel balcony in Norway’s capital and waved to an emotional
crowd of supporters cheering for the new Nobel laureate. Her appearance in Oslo
came hours after her daughter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize award on her
behalf. Machado was recognized after mounting the most serious peaceful
challenge in years to the authoritarian government of Venezuelan President
Nicolas Maduro.

Sherrone Moore was in custody in the Washtenaw (Michigan) County Jail on
Wednesday night as a suspect in an alleged assault, just hours after he was fired
as Michigan’s football coach for having what the school said was an “inappropriate
relationship with a staff member.” Moore was initially detained by police in Saline,
Michigan, on Wednesday and turned over to authorities in Pittsfield Township “for
investigation into potential charges.”
