News

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I'm Will Pearson with your County FM News.
Environment Canada has issued A YELLOW SNOWFALL WARNING. Hazardous winter conditions are likely today, beginning this afternoon and continuing through this evening. We can expect snowfall amounts of up to 15 cm., mixing with ice pellets at times, resulting in icy and slippery conditions. We’ll have more details on our weather report following sports.
The PLANNING and DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE will be meeting tonight at 6:00 in Shire Hall, weather permitting. Members will receive a presentation regarding the County’s Cultural Heritage Master Plan. Also rezoning applications have been filed by a numbered company for 2188 County Road 1, by Samantha Lester and Kanwar Gill for 1430 County Road 12, and by
Fairacres Farms at 1591 Gilead Road, all in Ward 2.
In consumer news: According to a new analysis from the U.S. non-profit Climate Central, the world’s top coffee producing countries are experiencing, on average, 57 extra days of coffee-damaging heat because of climate change. Heat can reduce the yield of the coffee plant and also lead to smaller beans that are of lower quality and more difficult to roast. The increasing variability in weather could lead to increasingly unstable prices.
In health news: The global spread of measles shows no signs of slowing down in 2026. The spread includes explosive outbreaks in travel hot spots like the southern U.S. and Mexico. And many European nations now also pose a heightened measles risk. Dozens of new infections have also been reported here in Canada to start the year, including a growing cluster of more than 70 cases in Manitoba. These infections come just months after Canada lost its measles elimination status following a massive outbreak throughout 2025. This highly contagious, airborne disease remains a threat, particularly for young children, pregnant individuals, and anyone with a weakened immune system. While most people do recover, measles can range in severity from a telltale rash to serious complications such as respiratory failure and permanent brain damage. With March Break travel around the corner, keeping more cases out of the country remains paramount in preventing additional outbreaks. Public health officials are warning Canadians to check their vaccination status before travelling.
And finally, in education news: Ontario Premier Doug Ford is defending his government's decision to change the financial assistance for post-secondary students and lift a seven-year tuition freeze. Starting this fall, the Ontario Student Assistance Program will lean more heavily on loans as opposed to grants, which are not repaid and are given out on a needs basis. Ford says thousands reached out to him over the Family Day weekend to voice their concerns.
Students have widely condemned the province's moves, saying they will be left with more debt, and many others will be simply driven out of post-secondary education because it is unaffordable.
