Canadians in Puerto Vallarta have been advised to shelter in place and keep a low profile by Global Affairs Canada because of escalating violence in Mexico after it was reported that Mexico’s army killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a man known as “El Mencho.” In an updated advisory, the department said Canadians in Jalisco State, which includes the popular travel destination Puerto Vallarta, should monitor media to stay informed of the situation on the ground. Videos being posted on social media show smoke over the city of Puerto Vallarta and it’s been reported that criminal gangs are setting up roadblocks and burning vehicles. Several flights into and out of the area were also suspended by airlines yesterday, including flights by Air Canada, Westjet, and Porter.
Infant formula sold at Costco stores across the country is being recalled due to the presence of cereulide toxin – this according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The toxin is a type of bacteria that causes food poisoning and is “highly heat stable” — meaning that even cooking or preparing infant formula for consumption may not deactivate or destroy the toxin. Symptoms of the toxin begin “rapidly after ingestion” and can include symptoms like nausea and vomiting. So far no illnesses related to the formula have been reported in Canada. The CFIA said the 1049-gram infant formula with whole milk made by the company Kendamil faces the recall.
