Ottawa is throwing another financial lifeline to Canada Post after it burned through an earlier government loan faster than expected last year amid massive losses and a renewed labour dispute. Late last week, Public Services and Procurement Canada said it will make another $1.01-billion loan facility available to the mail carrier to help it “maintain its solvency and keep services running” while it moves ahead with a major overhaul of its operations. The money will be provided on an “as-needed” basis and must be repaid. This is effectively a top-up to a $1-billion loan facility Ottawa provided to Canada Post in January, 2025, to help the Crown corporation deal with a cash crunch caused by large continuing losses and a $500-million bond repayment due last summer. That credit line was supposed to last through the 2025-26 fiscal year. However, Canada Post had exhausted the available cash by December, following a record third-quarter loss caused in part by a strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. The federal government – which is Canada Post’s sole shareholder – has said the carrier’s current business model is unsustainable, and it cannot keep bailing the Crown corporation out.

Seahawks field goal kicker Jason Myers set a Super Bowl record with 5 field goals and another for the most points by a kicker in the big game as Seattle took a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots. An estimated 127m people tuned into Super Bowl 60 yesterday, which was not nearly as entertaining as the last time the two teams met in the big game. In case you missed it, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny was the half time entertainer, and he was joined by Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. Much better than the game itself.

Scottie Barnes had 25 points and 14 rebounds to help the Toronto Raptors beat the Indiana Pacers 122-104 yesterday afternoon. Barnes was 12 of 20 from the field and had six assists, four blocks and two steals in 33 minutes. Toronto won its second straight to move 10 games above .500 at 32-22.

In Olympics news, Canadian curling mixed doubles pair Jocelyn Peterman and Brent Gallant won’t advance to the playoffs after a rough weekend where they went 3 and 5. And in team figure skating, Canada placed fifth, while the US took gold over Japan and Italy.
