Prince Edward County and most of the province continues under an Environment Canada heat warning with some areas of the province hitting a humidex of 45 today. Temperatures will ease in northern and central Ontario tonight and decrease in the rest of the province as the week progresses. People, especially those who are vulnerable, are advised to minimize outdoor activity at peak temperatures, remain hydrated and seek public cooling areas if they do not have access to air conditioning. I will have more information with the weather.
A partial burn ban is in effect in Prince Edward County. Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue issued the ban earlier today due to the conditions created by the extreme heat and lack of rain. Open-air burning is restricted to a container with a screened top or a small campfire and fireworks are not permitted while the ban is in effect. You can still use propane fueled appliances and charcoal barbecues provided they are supervised. Violating the restrictions can result in a fine as well as the cost of fire services being charged to the person responsible for the violation.
Quinte Conservation announced a partnership with Paddle Pod Canada to provide self-serve kayak rentals at Depot Lakes and Massassauga Point Conservation Areas. Visitors can rent a kayak along with a life jacket and a paddle at both of these parks using a mobile app. The app will unlock the kayak and provide notifications about weather and water hazards. The initiative is part of a two-year pilot project with the Toronto based start-up to provide user-friendly, affordable watercraft rentals. The Paddle Pod rentals will be available from July through late September in both 2026. Prices start at $17.99 for the first hour. If the program is successful, Quinte Conservation plans to make rental watercraft a permanent feature at select conservation areas.

Donald Trump has backtracked on his threat to impose tolls on the Strait of Hormuz. The US President said yesterday that he was reimposing a US blockade of Iranian ports and that the United States would charge a 20 percent toll on ships using the waterway, leading to spike in oil prices and significant International push back. Today, Trump backed away from the tolls, saying instead that the blockade would go into effect but various trade and investment deals with Gulf states would cover the cost of guarding the Strait. Meanwhile, Iran continued to fire missiles at countries and attack vessels in the region while the US launched overnight attacks on Iranian targets.

Haaland apparently purchased the taxidermy keepsake at Wild Bill’s Western Store in Dallas but when asked by reporters, he quipped, “it followed me home.”
