In local news, the County of Prince Edward announced the recipients of the 2026 Municipal Community Grants Program, supporting local organizations that strengthen community well-being, enhance quality of life, and build capacity across the community.
Mayor Steve Ferguson said, “Prince Edward County is blessed to have so many community-minded organizations and the hundreds of staff and volunteers who work incredibly hard to enrich our community through a variety of activities and initiatives. Investing in these organizations through the Municipal Community Grants Program has an impact on the lives of many throughout Prince Edward County.”
The Municipal Community Grants Program aims to improve the well-being and quality of life of the community and its residents through financial assistance to non-profit, community-based organizations. This year, a total of 27 local organizations will receive support through a combination of cash and in-kind grants. The funding will bolster a diverse range of initiatives focused on culture, heritage, recreation, environment, and health and human services. The list of recipients can be found on TheCounty.ca website.
JUSTICE
A Peterborough jury has found a 32-year Jesse Rowe guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Prince Edward County native Cynara Lewis. The 27 year-old Lewis was stabbed to death at a Peterborough apartment in September of 2023.
According to the Picton Gazette Rowe was also found guilty of aggravated assault in the stabbing of 33 year-old Daycota Csiszar. Rowe, who yelled at the jury and cursed others in the courtroom, will be sentenced at a later date.
Cynara Lewis was a student at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute and won a gold medal in photography in a provincial competition in 2014.
CANADA POST
Canada Post is preparing to convert an additional 485,000 homes across Canada from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027, as part of the Crown corporation’s attempt to modernize and return to financial self-sustainability. Ontario will see the most conversions, with more than 158,000 addresses affected.
And finally, County residents with party line telephones are seeing their vintage communication systems coming to an end. Back in 2019 the CRTC legally permitted Bell to stop selling residential two-party lines to new customers. Existing accounts were grandfathered, meaning legacy subscribers in Ontario could keep their shared line only until they moved or cancelled the service.
That is now coming to an end as Bell’s traditional landline networks are actively being replaced by fiber-optic infrastructure or wireless Home Phone terminals, meaning any lingering legacy lines are being forced to upgrade to digital services.
Part line subscribers will need to find a new means of getting local gossip.
