And, it’s the end of an era. CBC and Rogers failed to come to an agreement on the rights to broadcast Saturday Night Hockey bringing an end to the iconic 90 year tradition of Hockey Night in Canada. Hockey Night in Canada was first broadcast by the newly formed CBC on radio in 1936. Hockey Night in Canada moved to television with the network in 1952. From the sixties to the early 2000’s, the signature Hockey Night in Canada theme and the familiar blue stick and puck logo were as much Canadian icons as the game itself. The modern era brought increased competition and more viewing options and Hockey Night in Canada began to lose ground. CBC lost the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada Theme in 2008 then Rogers Sportsnet bought the rights to NHL hockey in Canada in 2014, paying over 5 billion dollars for the privilege. CBC negotiated a 12 year deal with Rogers to continue airing Hockey Night in Canada but could not agree with Rogers on a renewal of that agreement announcing today that the program would end. The network plans to replace Hockey Night in Canada with a showcase of Canadian athletes competing in various sports across Canada and abroad.
