This past weekend was the annual “skip weekend” at Sandbanks Park. The event gets it’s name from students who traditionally skip school to camp and party in the park on the last weekend in May. Local OPP officers partnered with the marine unit and park wardens to patrol park areas and check vehicles in and around Sandbanks Park. As a result of the police presenece, two individuals where charged with impaired driving and multiple seven day suspensions were issued for registering in the warning range or having alcohol in the bloodstream while driving with a novice licence. Police also seized a large quantity of alcohol and cannibis from underage campers or for being readily accessible inside vehicles. In addition to the drug and alcohol infractions, there was one incident of a camper requiring medical attention, a stolen vehicle and several traffic incidents.

A 38 year old Belleville man is in custody facing arson charges after a major fire Monday night in Belleville’s west end. Belleville Police were called to the scene of the fire in the area of Moira St. West and Wallbridge Crescent around 8 o’clock. Witnesses said a man was behaving erratically and uttering threats before setting a vehicle under a carport on fire. The blaze spread to the residence and a neighbouring home. Police arrested the man nearby and charged him with several offences for arson, mischief and uttering threats. The fire casued extensive damage to two vehicles, destroyed one residence and damaged the other but there were no injuries and two pets were successfully rescued by Fire Fighters. The accused is being held pending a bail hearing.

In a separate incident last night, Belleville Police were called to a home in the west end following reports that a man was kicking a door and threatening a female resident. Police confronted the man who then exposed himself to the officers. A 43 year old man has been charged with assault, uttering threats and indecent exposure. The accused is being held pending a bail hearing.

Loyalist College celebrated the grand opening of a new Medical Radiation Technology lab today. The new facility will feature two fully-functioning X-Ray machines that will provide practical experience for students in the College’s Medical Radiation Technician program. The popular program currently offers 35 spaces and includes placement opportunities within the Quinte Health Care system and in Napanee. The new lab will also increase the available resources for diagnostic imaging within the region.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc sent a letter to his counterparts in the United States and Mexico stating that Canada’s preference is to renew the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement when it comes up for review on July 1. LeBlanc’s letter said the current agreement has been highly beneficial to all three countries but that Canada would consider any proposal that works for the long term prosperity of all three nations. The letter comes on the heels of a proclamation by Trump lowering the tarriff on some steel and aluminum derivatives. Leblanc is in Washington today meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

The 10th Annual Uber Lost and Found List was released today. The list records the most unusual items left in Uber vehicles by forgetful passengers. Among the most unusual items this past year were dentures with only 2 teeth, a Donny Osmond group photo, and a security ankle monitor. In prior years the list has included such oddities as a live lobster, a fake butt and a taxidermied rabbit but the most frequently abandoned article is a phone.

Columbus Blue Jacket’s defenceman Zach Werenski was named this year’s winner of the Norris Trophy today. The Norris is awarded to the player who demonstrates the best all round ability through the regular season in a defencive position. Werenski is only the sixth American born player to win the award in it’s 72 year history.

Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey was named WNBA Eastern Conference player of the week today, a first for Mabrey and a first for the new team. Mabrey averaged 21 points and 5.5 assists in last week’s wins over the Chicago Sky and the Seattle Storm.

The first game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs gets underway tonight. The Las Vegas Golden Knights face off against the Carolina Hurricanes at 8 pm in Raleigh.

The Blue Jays travel to Atlanta for the first game of a three game series against the Braves. Toronto will send Kevin Gausman up against Bryce Elder for Atlanta. First pitch goes out at 7:15.
