In local news, there were scattered power outages across the region this morning after a wind and rain event overnight resulting in downed trees and hydro lines.There are over 250 hydro customers in Picton without power from 11 outages.A tree came down on lines on Union Street in Picton around 1 a.m. Friday. Power was restored across the County this morning.
With a multi-day heat event in the forecast starting on Sunday, the City of Belleville is reminding the public that the Quinte Sports & Wellness Centre and Belleville Public Library are public cooling centres for those needing relief from the heat. QSWC is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day for cooling and the library is open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Splash pads at West Riverside Park, Parkdale Veterans Park and Kinsmen Park and are also open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Numerous hikers were caught in a rockfall north of Lake Louise with at least one dead and three injured, according to the RCMP and Parks Canada.At around 1:30 p.m. yesterday, Lake Louise RCMP were notified that multiple hikers were caught in a rock slide on a trail in the Bow Lake/Bow Glacier Falls area.Search and recovery operations, involving both drones and dogs, continued until dark last night resumed today.

On Wednesday, a three-year-old Montreal girl defied the odds. She was found safe in Ontario after an intensive four-day search that included up to 200 officers and trained volunteers, a helicopter and ATVs.

Canada Post says it has reached a deal with the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association, the second-largest union representing its workers.The union represents 8,500 of the Crown corporation’s employees, most of whom are responsible for managing post offices in rural areas of the country.The new collective agreement includes a wage increase of 11 per cent over three years, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2024, Canada Post said in a statement Thursday. The two parties have been negotiating for 18 months.
And finally, it was 50 years ago today that our summers have never been quite the same thanks to a “mindless eating machine” that terrorized moviegoers and beachgoers alike. That was the day Jaws hit theatres, ushering in the era of the summer blockbuster and becoming a pop culture phenomenon that still resonates today. Steven Spielberg’s classic tale of a great white shark stalking the waters off an island beach town in New York state and devouring unsuspecting swimmers, broke records and became the first film to cross the $100-million US mark at the box office. The movie brought suspense to a new level as the menacing shark does not actually appear until 81 minutes into the movie when Richard Dreyfus tells the other hunters that they need a bigger boat.

In the NBA finals, the Indiana Pacers forced a game seven match with a decisive 108-91 home win over the Oklahoma City Thunder last night. Game 7 goes Sunday night.

A week after a trying and wet US Open, the PGA tour is in Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Again Canadians are making a great showing after the first round of play. Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor are tied for 7th as they finished the round at -4, four shots behind leaders Scottie Scheffler and Austin Eckroat.

In the CFL, The 0-2 Toronto Argonauts host the 2-0 Saskatchewan Roughriders tonight. In week 3 of the season, only the Montreal Alouettes have any victories (3) among the Eastern Division teams.On Saturday, the Ottawa Red Blacks travel to Calgary to face the Stampeders. Also the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will face the BC Lions in Vancouver.
