News
Prince Edward County and most of the province are under a yellow weather advisory from Environment Canada. Between 20 and 40 mm of rain is expected to fall starting this evening and last until Thursday morning with Thunderstorms and fog possible in some areas. Saturated and frozen ground combined with snow melt could cause localized flooding as well as hazardous conditions around creeks, ditches, rivers and low lying areas. Motorists should exercise caution and watch for pooled water on roadways as well as washed out or flooded areas. It could be worse though, the same storm is expected to drop freezing rain on the Ottawa Valley and southern Quebec.
Quinte Conservation has also issued a warning for the Bay of Quinte watershed. Prince Edward County could lose most of it’s remaining snow cover over the next few days which could cause some waterways to overflow their banks and flood low lying areas. The good news is that could be the peak for the season with waterways receding after that.
I will have more information with the weather forecast.
More information is emerging about shots that were fired at the US Consulate in Toronto earlier today. Toronto Police now say the shots were probably fired around 4:30 this morning but that police did not learn of the shooting for another hour when someone flagged down an officer and reported it. Police have released video which shows a white Honda stopping outside the consulate on University Avenue. Two men exit the vehicle and fire multiple rounds from a handgun then return to the car and leave the scene. RCMP and Toronto Police are now searching for the two suspects in what they are calling a National Security Incident and are appealing to the public for witnesses and video footage that might help with the investigation. According to officials, it is likely people inside the building were unaware of the incident because of the consulate’s heavy fortifications and there were no injuries. olice also confirmed that security has been increased around US and Israeli embassies and consulates in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The shooting follows an explosion outside the US Embassy in Norway on Sunday and is assumed to be in response to the war in Iran but no motive or connection between the two incidents has been established at this point.
Hastings Prince Edward District School Board Chair Dr. Kari Kramp said today that mid year results show measurable progress on each of the board’s strategic objectives. Those objectives include strengthening foundational skills like math and reading, advancing Indigenous education, fostering critical thinking and promoting citizenship, well-being and safety. Among the programs credited for the progress were the implementation of learning partners and coaches to improve math and reading skills, Indigenous Student Success coaches, Artificial Intelligence Leads and the Words Matter Campaign. The board also cited the improvement in seven of eight Provincial EQAO assessments last year as evidence that progress is being made. Kramp said the results should give parents confidence that resources are directly supporting student achivement.
And in case you missed it, this weekend was the Salla Reindeer Cup in Salla, Finland. More than 1,000 fans from across Europe attended this year’s event to watch reindeer race around a 1 kilometer track. Reindeer racing is an organized and regulated sport that has existed since the 1950’s when the Fins still depended on reindeer as work animals for forest work. The male reindeer are specially bred and trained and they not only have to race around the course, they also pull their handlers on a pair of skis. This year’s Reindeer cup was won by PomPom. Along with the cup, PomPom and all the reindeer who competed were rewarded with their favorite treat. Lichen.
