Considering the strong mayor powers granted to mayors across the province PEC Mayor Steve Ferguson has decided to delegate these powers back to the elected Council and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) wherever possible. Ferguson says he understands the responsibility that comes with Strong Mayor Powers and as the Mayor of the County of Prince
Edward and that he is committed to upholding and defending the democratic
process that forms the foundation of municipal governance.

New research has found that many family doctors are choosing to work in emergency departments or other areas of hospitals instead of practising comprehensive family medicine, potentially exacerbating Ontario’s family doctor shortage. The study published Tuesday in the Annals of Family Medicine looked at 30 years of data in Ontario, covering a period from 1993 to 2022. It concluded that there was a substantial decrease in the number of comprehensive family doctors in the province on a per capita basis. In fact over the study period, the data showed that while the number of family physicians increased from 104 to 118 per 100,000 people, the number of comprehensive family physicians decreased from 71 to 64 per 100,000 people. The data further showed that of the 6,310 additional family doctors who entered the workforce over the study period, nearly 40 per cent were in focused practice. The study found that despite training more family doctors, the numbers do not add up to balance the need

A new poll suggests nearly 70 per cent of Canadians support mandatory childhood vaccinations. The Angus Reid Institute survey comes as a measles outbreak touches several
provinces, primarily infecting unvaccinated infants, kids and teens. The poll of almost 1,700 Canadians found 69 per cent of respondents between May 20 and 23 said proof of immunization should be required for kids to attend daycare and school. That statistic was slightly lower in Alberta, at 60 per cent, but higher than the 48 per cent of Albertans who supported a mandate last year. Last week, Ontario reported nearly 1,800 measles cases had emerged since the outbreak began in October. Alberta reported 628 cases yesterday.

Elon Musk is leaving his government role as a top adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump after spearheading efforts to reduce and overhaul the federal bureaucracy. His departure, announced last night, marks the end of a turbulent chapter that included thousands of layoffs, the evisceration of government agencies and reams of litigation. Despite the upheaval, the billionaire entrepreneur struggled in the unfamiliar environment of Washington, and he accomplished far less than he hoped.

The way priority funding for the homelessness population is distributed in Hastings County has undergone a change. County Council approved a more focused funding approach to have half of $6.5 million available to the County be allocated to three local organizations under the
Homelessness Prevention Program. Those include the Grace Inn Shelter, John Howard Society and St Leonard’s Home. A report from County Community and Human Services director Jamie-Lynne Osmond had come to a committee meeting on May 14 and indicated those three organizations are ones that are making the most significant reduction to
homelessness. This is done through the targeting of youth, people suffering from mental
health/addictions and singles who lack housing accommodation. Most of the rest of the money will go to programs for the homeless administered by municipalities, such as warming rooms, however, $500,000 is set aside this year to allow agencies to apply to run a county-wide food distribution centre. Some of the $6.5 million will come from the province and will be available to the County the next two fiscal years. The total number of people known to be homeless in the county in March was 291 compared to 146 in the same month of 2024.
