The Planning and Development Committee will be meeting next Wednesday. They will consider an application from a numbered company to develop a 17-lot subdivision at Flatt Point on County Road 13, and a second application to create a right-of-way for that proposed subdivision. The Committee is also expected to make a decision on an application by Base31 for a development of 244 single detached lots, 171 townhouse units, and 66 stacked townhouse units at County Road 22 and Kingsley Road. You can view materials for each of the applications at the County’s Planning Portal. You can provide comments through the Planning Portal or to the Planning Department. The meeting itself is next Wednesday, November 19 at 6 pm in Shire Hall, with live stream on the municipality’s YouTube channel.

A recent report from Stats Can reveals Canada’s official poverty rate has increased from under 7 per cent in 2020 to almost 11 per cent in 2023. Deep poverty, or disposable family income below 75 per cent of the official poverty line, is up to 5 ½ per cent as of 2023. Also up are rates of chronic homelessness, moderate or severe food insecurity, and low literacy and numeracy, as well as the number of 15- to 24-year-olds not in employment, education, or training.

The Ontario Living Wage Network has released its 2025 calculations for the hourly wage a worker needs to cover basic expenses and participate in the community. In the east region, which includes the County, the living wage is $22.20, up 2 1/2 per cent from 2024. Employers in the County who offer a living wage include Wander the Resort, Wentworth Landscapes, The County of Prince Edward, Visit the County, The Community Foundation, and the Chamber of Commerce. Despite the province’s annual October 1st increase in the minimum wage, now at $17.60, there is still no place in Ontario where you could work full-time earning the minimum wage and cover all your expenses.

Finally, in its recent budget, the federal government proposed to eliminate two taxes. The Underused Housing Tax had added one per cent in federal tax on the ownership of vacant or underused housing in an effort to crack down on ownership by non-residents. The other tax applied to luxury purchases over $100,000, like yachts and sailboats, as well as private jets, helicopters and seaplanes. According to the federal government, elimination of the two taxes will result in administrative savings for the Canada Revenue Agency, provide relief to the aviation and boating industries, and increase the overall efficiency of the luxury tax framework.
