In local news, there is some good news for the construction weary residents of
Wellington. Clearway Group, the municipality's contractor, has completed asphalt milling
and other work in preparation for the final paving on sections of Belleville St, Wellington
Main St, and Prince Edward Dr.
Where the asphalt milling has taken place, there are temporary bumps in the road
where asphalt lap joints have been applied. Motorists are asked to approach and
traverse the construction zones with caution. The lap joints will be removed when the
final paving of the road takes place.
The final paving is expected to occur the week of Nov 17, weather dependent.

WATER

Recent rainfall in the Quinte watershed still has yet to impact drought conditions still
lingering from the summer
Quinte Conservation is reminding the public that the Level 3 Low Water Condition
issued on October 22 is still in effect for the Quinte watershed.
Officials say ongoing and future significant rain is required to make up for the deficit in
water supply over the last 5 months.
October rainfall amounts were near normal for this time of year; however, seasonal
precipitation amounts were well below average and the month's rain wasn’t enough to
fully restore water levels across the Quinte watershed.
Most streams are currently flowing at only 15-per cent or less of normal for this time of
year. Low water impacts continue to be experienced across the watershed. Residents
and businesses should continue to reduce water consumption.

ECONOMY

The Canadian economy added 67,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate
ticked down to 6.9 per cent, Statistics Canada said on Friday, with part-time work
driving the increase.
By sector, the influx of work was driven by wholesale and retail trade — which added
41,000 jobs — as well as transportation and warehousing, information, culture and
recreation, and utilities.
The construction sector shed 15,000 jobs. The data agency noted that work in goods-
producing industries (such as construction and manufacturing) declined between
January and October, while services-producing industries gained 142,000 jobs during
that same period.

POLITICS

Federal Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux announced yesterday that he is resigning from
the House of Commons, contrary to speculation he was preparing to defect to the
Liberals.
Rumours had swirled all week that the Alberta MP was considering crossing the floor,
and Conservative sources had said he was under pressure to stay from some in the
party. But Jeneroux says coercion played no role in his decision to leave federal politics.
Jeneroux's resignation is the second departure from the Conservative caucus
announced this week after Nova Scotia MP Chris d'Entremont joined the Liberals on
Tuesday — two blows to Pierre Poilievre's leadership which also give the minority
Liberal government more breathing room to get bills, like this week's budget, through
Parliament.

FOOD

A federal judge has ordered U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to fully fund
this month's food aid for 42 million low-income Americans by Friday, blocking its plan to
only provide reduced benefits during the record-long government shutdown.
U.S. District Judge John McConnell in Providence, R.I., accused the administration on
Thursday of withholding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, known as
SNAP or food stamps, for "political reasons" as he ordered the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) to fund the program so people get 100 per cent of their benefits.
"The evidence shows that people will go hungry, food pantries will be overburdened,
and needless suffering will occur," McConnell said during a virtual court hearing on
Thursday. "That's what irreparable harm here means."
The Trump administration quickly moved to appeal McConnell's decision, leaving it
unclear whether ultimately SNAP benefits would be paid out in full on Friday as the
judge had ordered.

And finally, for the third time in Canadian history, more women than men have been
elected to a provincial or territorial Legislative Assembly.
In the recent elections in the Yukon, 11 women and one non-binary MLA were elected
to the 21 member legislature or 57%.
Previously, British Columbia surpassed 50 per cent representation in the 2024
provincial election, and the  Northwest Territories, which reached gender parity after
its 2019 election.
