News

From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Don Leslie with your County FM News

In local news, Quinte West Councillor David O’Neil made an interesting announcement at yesterday’s meeting of the Quinte Economic Development Commission. He
said local politicians had been chatting with the Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development of Candu Energy, Todd Smith, about locating a small nuclear reactor on the dormant former Cascades/Domtar property in Trenton.

Smith was the former MPP for Bay of Quinte riding. Current Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp said he hadn’t been involved in talks on the subject but thought it was an “interesting idea” worthy of consideration.

It was recently announced by Federal and Provincial Ministers that four small modular reactors would be built at the Darlington plant. In addition to the Darlington New Nuclear Project and refurbishments at the Darlington and Pickering nuclear generating stations and Bruce Power, Ontario is exploring multiple new nuclear energy generation projects to build for the future.

TARIFF
The federal government is firing back at Stellantis and General Motors and cutting the number of tariff-free vehicles the automakers can import from the U.S. to sell in Canada. The two multinational manufacturers will no longer be exempt from paying Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on as many U.S.-assembled vehicles as before.
The move is an attempt to put pressure on the companies to reinvest in Canadian production and workers to get this benefit back and avoid a big tariff bill.

“This action follows the automakers’ unacceptable decision to scale back their manufacturing presences in Canada, directly breaching their commitments to the country and Canadian workers,” the government said in a late-night media release. Ottawa is taking action after Stellantis announced its plan to expand in the U.S.,
General Motors also confirmed Tuesday that it was ending production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at a plant in Ingersoll, Ont., due to demand.

QUEBEC DOCTORS
After months of negotiating, Quebec to table special legislation today to force new deal with doctors. Premier François Legault stated that It’s time for government ‘to stand up’ and change how doctors are remunerated.

The Legault government is expected to force through special legislation to change the compensation model for family doctors and medical specialists, as MNAs sit in the National Assembly from early this morning.

In May, the government tabled Bill 106 which included a provision linking physicians’ pay to performance indicators to get them to take on heavier patient loads. But doctors have repeatedly warned they cannot meet performance targets without more resources.

The premier made those plans clear in a recorded video address on Wednesday.
Premier Legault claims the state of negotiations had left him with no other choice, saying “we are not doing this against doctors, we are doing this for Quebecers.”

And finally, as our nightly skies over the next week, there’s been a new comet in the sky over the past few weeks, which you can now see for yourself.
Comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon
passed closest to Earth on Tuesday, when it was visible close to the horizon. However, the comet has now risen a bit higher in the sky, making now an opportune time to see it.

The comet can be found in the western sky as soon as it gets dark. If you look at the Big Dipper, the first star in the handle of the “spoon” points to a bright star called Arcturus. Comet Lemmon can be found above and to the left of the unmistakably bright star and is best seen with binoculars. And if you miss out now, you’ll never see it again: it won’t come back for another 1,300 years.
