Changes are coming to parking fees in Belleville but council is expected to evaluate very different options at their meeting this afternoon. The first option, which staff have recommended, will see an increase in hourly rates from a dollar to a dollar fifty, as well as an increase in fines. There is, however, an option on the table, to remove parking fees and offer free on-street parking in the downtown district. Consultants suggest that option would lead to a budget shortfall of $800,000. Whichever option council chooses, drivers won’t see a change come into effect until next year.
Following an outcry from renters and housing experts, the Ontario government is walking back a controversial proposal that could have scrapped the province’s “security of tenure” rules, permitting landlords to evict tenants once leases expire. Housing Minister Rob Flack announced Sunday afternoon that the government will not move forward with the changes, which were outlined in a bill introduced Thursday. The bill, the “Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act,” could have allowed landlords to “adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs or business strategies,” according to a technical briefing. The government argued that more flexibility around leases would bring additional rental units to the market. The proposal, however, would have effectively upended the province’s long-standing “security of tenure” protections, which allow renters to remain in a rental unit after a lease period ends, so long as they adhere to the Residential Tenancies Act and original lease agreement. It would have affected about 1.7 million renter households in Ontario.
Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed South Asian leaders about the importance of “reliable partners who honour their commitments” at the opening of the ASEAN summit in Malaysia yesterday. The subtle jabs were delivered against a backdrop of rising rhetoric and tariff threats by U.S. President Donald Trump, who promised to impose a further 10 per cent duty on Canadian goods in retaliation for Ontario government television ads that quote former president Ronald Reagan’s criticism of tariffs. Carney’s address in Kuala Lumpur early Sunday was part pitch for freer trade with the ASEAN block of nations and part veiled reference to the worsening relations with the U.S. The Liberal government is pushing ahead with free-trade negotiations at ASEAN, hoping to conclude a deal next year. There is some hope that Carney and Trump wull meet on the sidelines of the summit to iron out their latest differences, but the president has said he’s not interested in talking.

Meanwhile, Trump was given a rousing, flag-waving greeting when he arrived in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, where he oversaw the signing of a peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia, which his administration helped broker last summer. It is expected that Trump will spend the ASEAN summit working on a trade deal with China.
Finally, former prime minister Justin Trudeau and pop singer Katy Perry have made their first public appearance as a couple. The pair was filmed holding hands on Saturday while leaving a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse Paris, according to website TMZ. Saturday was Perry’s 41st birthday. The Saturday night outing marks the first time the pair has made a public outing as a couple. On Oct. 11, the Daily Mail published photos of Trudeau and Perry sharing a kiss on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Those photos were reportedly taken by a tourist on a passing boat.
