A 47 year old Bloomfield resident is facing an assault charge following an altercation with a parking enforcement officer in Picton last Thursday. Prince Edward County OPP were alerted to a disturbance in a downtown parking lot after the parking enforcement officer issued the other individual with an infraction notice. The accused was arrested and charged before being released pending a court date. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who might have additional information to contact the Prince Edward County OPP or crimestoppers.
In another incident, Prince Edward County OPP stopped a driver for speeding on Highway 62 last Friday night and discovered the man was impaired. In addition to exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 kph, police have charged a 30 year old Picton man with failure to comply with a demand. The accused was released from custody and will appear in court in October.
Prince Edward County municipal staff are reminding everyone to check their voter registration ahead of municipal elections October 26th. If you are on the list you should receive notification by mail. If you aren’t, there are several ways to add your name. You can do it online, by email or in person at Shire Hall, any County Library branch or at a voting location on October 17th, the advance voting day.
Quinte Health’s Crisis Intervention Centre has a new name. Going forward it will be known as the Mental Health and Crisis Services Centre. The change was made to better reflect the range of services offered by the Centre. The Mental Health and Crisis Services are located in Belleville General Hospital and provide free mental health support to anyone in the Quinte region over 16 years of age. No referral is necessary and patients can access help by phone, in person on a walk-in basis at the Belleville hospital or through outreach appointments at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. The centre also provides 24/7 telephone crisis support and is connected to the nationwide 988 suicide crisis hotline.
In international news, the United States struck targets in Iran today after two Saudi tankers were hit with projectiles thought to have come from Iran. Escalating conflict and a lack of progress on implementing the deal previously agreed to by the two sides have raised fears of further disruptions to petroleum exports from the region. Both sides are threatening further retaliation while the US is proposing to increase sanctions on the Iranian economy. Qatar and Oman have attempted to broker a deal to reopen the Straits of Hormuz but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
And you can’t blame this one on Donald Trump but an American company is involved. Canadian notebook company Hilroy issued notebooks with a new cover design ahead of this year’s school year. The cover includes the map of Canada previously on notebook covers but somehow Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island have disappeared. The company is blaming the mistake on a printing error but there is no explanation so far of how the notebooks reached consumers before anyone noticed. Hilroy is owned by American stationary company ACCO brands.

In major league baseball action, Toronto starts a critical series with the Cleveland Guardians tonight. Cleveland holds down the final wildcard spot with Toronto, Baltimore and Texas hot on their heals. The Jays will send Spencer Arrighetti to the mound against Gavin Williams for the Guardians. First pitch goes out at 6:40 in Cleveland.
In soccer news, Canadian Defensive Midfielder Niko Sigur will reportedly leave Croatia’s Hadjuk Split and join fellow Canadian Jason Russell-Rowe playing for the French Ligue 1 Toulouse FC team. Today is the final day for European Football Club transfers in a year which saw several Team Canada players leverage their World Cup appearances to advance their European careers.
And former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS announcer Tony Romo was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol today. Romo pleaded no contest saying that he has taught his three sons to accept the consequences of their actions and will do the same himself. Romo’s licence was suspended and ignition interlocks were ordered on any vehicles owned by the former player. CBS said Romo is currently on leave while the network assesses his future.
