News

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News.

A reminder that today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund will partner once again with radio stations across Canada, including County FM, for A Day to Listen. This year’s theme is Honouring Truth with Action.

In finance news: The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has just published a report comparing the minimum wage and the living wage in Ontario. The minimum wage is the minimum amount the provincial government requires employers to pay workers. The minimum wage is adjusted for inflation each year, and, for most employees, it will increase to $17.95 tomorrow. However, the minimum wage bears no relation to the actual cost of living. The living wage corresponds to the amount workers need to live a decent life, affording basic needs like food, shelter, and transportation, as well as modest community participation expenses, such as a modest vacation and after-school activities for children. The report shows the gap between Ontario’s minimum wage and living wage continues to grow. Female and racialized workers are more likely to earn less than the living wage. The Centre for Policy Alternatives recommends that the provincial government raise the minimum wage to the living wage rate – a single change that would considerably improve the lives of more than 1.5 million workers in Ontario.

Also in finances: According to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, the number of consumer insolvencies in Ontario in the second quarter of 2026 increased by over 10 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. The data also shows the number of filings in Ontario is rising at a faster rate than other provinces.

In health news: New research recently published in The Lancet Oncology linked an estimated 12 per cent of all new caner cases worldwide in 2024 to viruses, bacteria, and other microbes. These infections can increase the risk of a number of different cancers, including stomach cancer, cervical cancer, some head and neck cancers, and liver cancer. The rates of some of these cancers can be reduced with vaccination programs.

In international news, the Israeli government believes that a FlyDubai pilot tried to crash a commercial plane en route to Tel Aviv after stabbing the co-pilot. An Israeli passenger and a crew member responded by entering the cockpit. The alleged attacker was subdued, with a separate crew member managing to stabilize the plane. Reuters has reported that the Israeli government assessed the incident as an attempted “terror attack.” Apparently, both pilots have been hospitalized after sustaining injuries. All other passengers are otherwise safe.

Finally, the OPP are searching for a missing County woman who might be travelling in a white, 2019 four-door Jeep Wrangler, with Ontario license plate DAXY 040. Forty-three-year old Ashley Bryant is described as 5’1″ with a slim build and curly, short brown hair, although she might be wearing a wig with straight, shoulder-length hair. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, tan tank top, ripped jeans, and brown boots, around 3:30 PM on September 25 near County Road 12. If you spot her, or have any information, please contact the OPP immediately.

allow motorists to enter their licence plate number which will then be used for enforcement. Drivers using the two-hour free parking available in the Front, Riverside, Riggs and Pinnacle lots still need to register so the two hour window can be monitored but they won’t need to pay unless they add more time. There are no changes for those that use the Hotspot App.

And in the UK a decision by the U.K.’s counterterrorism police to release five suspects on bail during an investigation into a suspected bomb plot at a U.S.-operated airbase in England has raised eybrows and attracted Donald Trump’s attention. Police confirmed Tuesday that no explosives were found in three vans linked to the suspects but a quantity of petrol was. Investigators said the decision to grant bail was grounded in “experience and strategy”. President Trump told reporters yesterday that he was surprised that the suspects were released and would not have done so if the decision had been his to make. British authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and that they have not ruled out involvement by Iran.
