HEALTH & WELLNESS

What tools help us strengthen our mental health? In this month’s Mental Health Check-in, Psychiatrist Dr. Joe Burley explores everyday strategies for maintaining emotional wellbeing. We will focus on ‘forest bathing’ and the benefits of spending time in nature. Let’s learn how our brain gets wired for calm and resilience through gentle practices—from mindful walks to small daily habits.

CONSUMERISM

Melissa Tran and Bree Seeley from The County Food Hub will talk about their free seven-week program, Recipe For Success, designed to help local food entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable businesses. From food safety and branding to storytelling and market readiness, this initiative removes the barriers faced by home-based makers and farmers’ market vendors — while strengthening the County’s local food economy. We will discover how provincial funding has made this program accessible and how participants learn more than just business skills. If you’ve ever dreamed of launching a food product, this interview might be your sign to start!

SERVICES

We kick off this year’s monthly series with professional dog trainer, Tasha Shaw-Verbic by taking a refreshing perspective on dog training. Tasha shares how stepping away from pressure, perfection, and endless “fix-it” lists can lead to calmer homes, more confident dogs, and deeper connection — while we honour rest and emotional wellbeing for both humans and dogs. Let’s begin this new year gently, with more ease and redefine what ‘success’ really looks like!

THE COUNTY NATURALLY

It’s always a great joy to see snow buntings in the winter. Banding them in the winter? Not so much. These visitors from the Arctic have to be banded in the cold, because bringing them into a nice warm banding lab would be bad for their health. Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory’s Bander in Charge, Ashley Jensen, tells Pamela Stagg what it’s like to research these cold-adapted birds.
