THE COUNTY WRITES….THE COUNTY READS
Brent Butt, the creator and star of Corner Gas, describes the origin of the popular Canadian sitcom, names his favourite comedians and reveals the advice he received from Linwood Barclay when he wrote his best-selling psychological thriller, Huge. Chris Finn, a multi-award winning comedian and comedy writer, (one of Brent’s faves), discusses writing for The Rick Mercer Report, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Corner Gas and others and the impact The Kids in the Hall had on him. (On Corner Gas, Chris played Marko, the creepy guy in the black shirt who drives a muscle car.) Note: Brent Butt is appearing at The Empire Theatre in Belleville, March 27.

Stacey Daub, President and CEO of Quinte Health Care, provides a construction update highlighting the progress made so far on the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital and explains how many innovative features will make it the first of its kind in North America. Hear a satirical song set to I Will Survive, written by retired County teacher, Gord Moran, produced by his life-long friend, Wayne McFaul, and sung with gusto by Sonya Zaback.

Are you part of an organization which could use funds for an upcoming project? Listen in while Interim Executive Director, Gillian Armstrong, talks about The Prince Edward County Arts Fund and Community Grants which are available for applications.
Brad Lynd and his family served coffee for many years as the first owners of the Bean Counter Café but for more than 14 years now the family have operated County Roasters, a local micro coffee roaster that sells organic, ethically sourced coffee beans. Brad tells us about their roasting process and what’s behind the taste of different types of coffee.
For the past 50 years, The Great Lakes Museum in Kingston has been collecting artifacts from this area’s marine history including the former steamship Keewatin. Dave McQueen visited the museum and learned all about it and its collections from Visitor Experience Manager, Claire Notman and Programs and Collections Coordinator, Daniel Rose.

In 2021, the ivory-billed woodpecker was declared extinct. The following year, it was declared un-extinct. Earlier this year, a tapir (a distant relative of the pig) was spotted in the remote Brazilian Amazon jungle one hundred years after it was declared extinct. So how do we know when an animal or bird is truly extinct? And who decides? And why are “extinct” birds and animals being rediscovered now? Pamela Stagg explores this intriguing puzzle.

COUNTY GROWS
Jim Hughes has poured a lifetime of effort into growing fruit crops on the family farm in Waupoos and also developing the horticultural industry for his neighbours and the province as a whole. Today he shares with us some of the joys and challenges of this rewarding career in horticulture. Jim is pictured here with some of the seasonal offshore workers who have returned year after year to the Hughes farm. Jim’s wife Marion says that it is this “extended family” that they will miss the most as she and Jim place the Blueberry Patch for sale and enter into retirement.

One of our commitments with the new website was to make it more accessible. You can now find a text version of the daily news on our website. As well, if you have never explored our long format reporting by our Community Reporter you are encouraged to click on the News Article tab on our site and then “Frequency News”.
For example from the last week you’d find longer articles with an image, text and audio on Quinte Health providing an update on the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital as well as a story on the 8 Wing/CFB Trenton 2-Air Movements Squadron being honoured at the Dukes hockey game.
