THE COUNTY WRITES….THE COUNTY READS

Novels lifted from history. Emma Donoghue’s latest best seller, The Paris Express, was inspired by an iconic photograph of a train accident in Paris in 1895. Vicki Delany’s novel, More than Sorrow, set in Prince Edward County, recounts the stories of courageous women with connections to Afghanistan and the Loyalist refugees from the American Revolution in 1784. Cheryl Singer reads an excerpt. Conversations worth repeating.

Let’s talk about ageism! We know that small everyday interactions can make a big difference in how older adults experience our community. In this interview we will learn how simple changes in language and perspectives can build stronger connections across generations. Project Manager of the “Don’t Call Me Dear” initiative, Anne VanVlack, joins us to discuss this project. From storytelling podcasts to intergenerational conversations between youth and seniors, this project is challenging stereotypes and highlighting the experience, knowledge, and contributions older adults bring to our community.
HEALTH & WELLNESS

Have you ever wondered what exactly a Dietician does? How about the difference between Dieticians and Nutritionists? March is Nutrition Month in Canada and this year the focus is on the role of Dieticians. We speak with Prince Edward Family Health Team Registered Dietician Sarah Sandham about what Dieticians do and how they can contribute to your overall health. We’ll learn what’s going on in the County for Nutrition Week, what Dietician programs and services are offered by the PEFHT, and hear tips on following a healthy diet.

It’s tax time and, for many people, filling out a tax form is a challenging task. A lot of people thinking they don’t owe money don’t bother to file, but this can mean they miss out on benefits and refunds. The Prince Edward Learning Centre offers an annual Tax Clinic where eligible residents can receive assistance from volunteers to complete and file tax returns. We talk with tax clinic volunteer Anne Russell about why we should file our taxes, how the PELC can help, and who is eligible for assistance.

Remember that last great holiday you had in the Canadian outdoors? How much was it worth — not just to you, but to the Canadian economy? The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society has been doing the math, and natural areas in Canada contributed a whopping $11 billion to our economy. Economist Jason Wong will explain the numbers to Pamela Stagg.

COUNTY GROWS

Viticulture, a segment worth repeating. Astrid Young chats with Geoff Heinricks, founder of Keint-he winery and the unsung pioneer of vinifera winegrowing in PEC (with additional commentary from Andre Gagne of Last House Vineyards, for whom Geoff currently consults). We talk about why PEC is the perfect place to grow pinot noir from many perspectives, and Geoff explains very succinctly—and sometimes esoterically—what it means when we say “great wine is made in the vineyard.”
NEED TO CONFIRM CORRECT SCIENCE & TECH EPISODE
SENIORS AND TECHNOLOGY

For six weeks, County FM explores topics and trends that can help you navigate through the maze of today’s technology. Research shows that among all the ways seniors use technology, lifelong learning is not at the top of the list. Research also shows that older adults learn differently from younger people.
In this our final episode, we dig a little deeper into lifelong learning by speaking with an expert about our capacity for learning in later life and the benefits this might offer.
County Profile will return Thursday, March 19.
