About the show
Through a mix of realism and psychological abstraction, Next to Normal is a rock musical that centres on a suburban family as they navigate the impacts of mental illness. Everything is almost normal as audiences get a look into the lives of the seemingly perfect family; a mother, a father, a daughter, and a son through their memory, collective grief, and perceptions of reality.
With an honest and unflinching look at mental health, this rock musical challenges traditional musical theatre conventions. With music by Tom Kitt, and book/lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the balance between heartbreak and hope is only surpassed by the ultimate emphasis on connection and understanding. Next to Normal is a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Award winning drama that brings loss, family dynamics, and the search for stability into the forefront of our exposure to the realities of mental health.
See Next to Normal, the acclaimed musical by Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey, presented by Shatterbox Theatre November 12-14 & 18-21, 2026 at The Cape in Prince Edward County.
