THE COUNTY WRITES…THE COUNTY READS
Sunday, June 22, 2025
12 – 1 p.m.

Vicki Delany has re-issued her novel More Than Sorrow which tells the stories of three courageous women: Hannah, a journalist recovering from a brain injury caused by an IED sustained in Afghanistan; Hila, a young Afghan woman haunted by the horrors she witnessed; Maggie, who fled the Mohawk Valley in the late 1700s to escape persecution. (excerpt read by Cheryl Singer)
Dr. Sima Samar is a medical doctor, founder of schools and hospitals and a thorn in the side of the Taliban. Award-winning journalist Sally Armstrong collaborated with Dr. Samar on her memoir, Outspoken: My Fight for Freedom and Human Rights in Afghanistan. Sally discusses the achievements of this remarkable woman along with the dangers Dr. Samar has faced in her lifelong fight for the rights of girls and women.

Sarah Fox, Executive Director of Visit the County, PEC’s Destination Marketing and Management Organization, outlines initiatives and programs designed to appeal to visitors and residents as tourist season gets underway. 
ICYMI: Vincent de Tourdonnet, PEC’s Transit Coordinator, has details on the newly launched Summer Weekend Transit Service.
It’s National Indigenous History Month and Marie Wilson, author of North of Nowhere: Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner, discusses the work of the Commission, the ten principles of reconciliation and the importance of continuing to listen to survivors and their families.

CONSUMERISM 

Camp at Waupoos Island, a place steeped in Indigenous and Loyalist history, is launching its inaugural Women’s Wellness Camp from July 11 to 13, designed to promote a nurturing space for connection and self-care. Attendees can partake in workshops, group sessions, and wellness classes — set against the tranquil backdrop of Waupoos Island. Let’s learn from its creators, mother and daughter team Christine and Charlotte Denouden, what they have planned for the weekend, as well as the interesting history of the island! 

CONSUMERISM

Pete Crighton is an Author, Record Collector, Freelance Content Writer for the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail and released his first book last month. He joins us in-studio again to talk about his book, The Vinyl Diaries: My Soundtrack To Queer Joy, and how this playlist of music helped him as a gay man through the precarious times of the AIDS pandemic and decades of self discovery. He speaks at Books & Co. Picton at 6:30 pm on June 21st. 

HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Prince Edward Family Health Team’s Cardiac Rehabilitation unit has helped more than 720 County residents recover from serious cardiac events. Registered Nurse and Cardiac Health Educator Cathy Brose, and Cardiac Team Physiotherapist, Nancy Lock, talk about the formation of the Cardiac Team, the services they provide, and the success they’ve achieved. We also discuss the future of the program, as both Cathy and Nancy prepare to move on to new challenges.

SERVICES

After Tasha Shaw-Verbic put the word out to our listeners during her last monthly interview, we are diving into two of your most requested topics: how to train our dogs to behave in public spaces—like restaurant patios—and what to do when we encounter off-leash dogs that don’t belong to us.

This week Jane Thompson is on location at Prinzhaven Farm on Gilead Rd. where Phil and Selena Prinzen have recently completed a major renovation in their dairy barn.  They describe for us the goals of the renovations and some of the adjustments that this entailed as well as the current state of dairy farming in the County and beyond.

Gage Broderick hosts this week’s County Profile as he speaks with local actor and fellow Theatre Roulant member, James Fraser. They’ll speak about James’ background, both personally and professionally and what led him to being an actor in Prince Edward County.

This week on Artscene, co-host Catelyn Thornton speaks with County Arts Executive Director, Janna Smith about the 32nd annual Art in the County show and sale running June 27 to July 13 at the County Art Lab in the Picton Armoury Building. Janna will be telling us about the show, the artists and the jurors, as well as announcing the winners of this year’s prizes.
